Hulsey, Democrats set to go separate ways

Brett Hulsey, the often-controversial representative from Madison in the state Assembly, is taking steps to become a political independent after his latest disagreement with fellow Democrats over whether to try to amend the Republicans' state budget.

Meanwhile, the Dane County Democratic Party's top official said Wednesday there is no doubt Hulsey would face a Democratic challenger in his heavily liberal West Side district if he stays with the party. If he declares as an independent, a Democrat also would likely challenge him, chairman Mike Basford predicted.

Basford said Hulsey's "bizarre" behavior over the last several months and his statements about possibly become an independent have made his position in the party "untenable."

"I can't explain it, and I can't excuse it," Basford said.

As a lifelong Democrat and a resident of Hulsey's district, all I can say is don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out, Brett.

Lawmaker spends campaign funds on used convertible, triathlon

Now campaign records show that Hulsey spent $1,199.50 in campaign funds to buy a 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet from Terry's Car Care in Madison in late June. He justified the expense by saying he would be driving the car in parades.
[...]
In May, Hulsey also paid $85.39 to participate in a triathlon. He wouldn't identify which one it was, but online records show he finished 139th out of 324 competitors at the Pardeeville Triathlon on July 6.

Of course, Hulsey wore Speedo-style swimwear, and a photographer has posted shots of him during different legs of the event.

Asked how the triathlon was related to his campaign, Hulsey claimed that he was "reaching out to constituents." He said many people he represents in the Legislature like to swim, bike and run in triathlons, including ones that are -- like this one -- some 35 miles from his district.

I did find this moderately amusing:

Joe Fadness, executive director of the state GOP, suggested that Hulsey's "bizarre and inappropriate" actions are a disgrace to the entire state Assembly.

"How long will Democrats condone Hulsey's irresponsibility and blatant abuse of power?" Fadness asked in an email.

Condone? What Dems even want anything to do with Hulsey?

WTH and that photo--Yike. PIcking on kids at the beach, photographing kids he doesn't know on the beach (oh ick), purchasing a car from donors just in case there's a parade somewhere, attempting to give his subordinates training on box-cutter self-defense... Methinks someone's sandwich is missing some filling in between.

From the Cap Times:

...a GOP aide is telling a story of Hulsey trying to defect to the Republican Party — and being turned down.
