How much of Madison's parkland is restored prairie tended by volunteers? Any statistics or data?

How much influence do you have with Rhythm and Booms?

So how bout them geese, ay?

Recycled rubber chips vs gravel: are there any other playgrounds besides the one at Yahara Park where the neighborhood wants to keep the gravel?

Should the use of city park facilities by unleashed children require a daily or annual tag, similar to that required for my dog?

Speaking of dogs, why isn't the ordinance prohibiting dogs in most parks enforced?

Similarly, why are dogs prohibited from so many city park areas?

Sorry for the threadjack, but...

I understand that "dog shit" may be hazardous; however, removal of dog excrement by the owner is required.

Lots of potentially dangerous things are allowed in parks. Should we keep kids out of our parks because they might get sick and vomit? What about adults, who may have infectious disease? What about teenagers, some of whom may start a fight? Should picnickers not be allowed to bring utensils, which may be left on the ground and cause injuries?

That's assuming the dog owners who ignore the signage prohibiting their pets in parks will pick up the poop.

That's an enforcement issue.
Should we disallow teens driving cars on the freeway because some may disregard the speed limit signs? Should we ban screwdrivers in public because some folks might get stabby with 'em?

Why disallow all dogs from parks areas because some owners are irresponsible?

I'll defer to Hank.
Presumably the same as for dog prohibition enforcement.

What do you figure they'd need to patrol every park in Madison?

Enforcement is not an all-or-nothing proposition.

I think public education would go a long way. If dogs in parks present such a problem, I also think that there could be better enforcement of the "pooper sccoper" ordinance (those who are walking dogs are required to possess an instrument with which excrement can be removed). No need to wait until irresponsible owners leave a pile behind.

Again, though, why prohibit all dogs instead of addressing the actual problem (the leaving behind of poo)?

Unleashed dogs frighten away the cranes in Cherokee Park, for one example not involving poop. Since there is a dog park about a mile away, as the crane flies, I think the arrangement seems very reasonable here.

I think the original leash laws were to limit dog attacks on kids and other humans, as well as animals, including other dogs. The poop issue is separate.
