That Swimming Pool Referendum

Postby atwoodian » Tue Nov 02, 2004 12:12 pm

So, what did everybody think? I was undecided right up to the wire. I finally decided to let 'em put it wherever they wanted. Not sure why.

Was it confusing? I didn't think so. Can we put this pool anywhere we want except Olin Turville without worrying about running another referendum? Yes or No. Seemed plain enough to me.

A little. I'd rather not see them put it anywhere on or near a lake shore. How about inland somewhere? I voted no.

I voted "yes', but my wife voted "no". Guess she was afraid they might site it in Vilas Park. NIMBYism on her part.

I voted yes because I want it at Warner Park. IMBYism.

I voted yes because our city has enough problems making decisions and I figured the more choices for placement the better.

Since so many Madison parks are on waterways (because we're not exactly short on waterways), the restriction really limits siting possibilities, especially near downtown. I voted yes.

If the Nos carry it, I'm lobbying for Breese Stevens. Fuck soccer, flood the bitch.

I voted no, because we really need pools in the parts of town that are farther away from the lakes. Downtown is closer to beaches and has fewer kids.

I voted NO because of my bias toward Elver Park. The area has a lot of kids from diverse backgrounds who probably don't have much to do other than hang out at the mall. Go, Elver, go!

The Goodman money is enough for one pool, but the city needs more, probably three. One northeast, one south central and one west. I say: Warner Park, Franklin Field, Elver and/or Garner Park, with Warner first.
Anyone else want to chime in?

Yeah, but it's easier for a kid from any neighborhood to take a bus downtown than to go clear across the city.

Multiple pools would be good, too.

Yeah, that's why downtown is just bustling with shopping, too. We need multiple pools where the bulk of the kids are actually located. I agree with Angus: Elver has got to get the first pool. Lot's of diversity, close to Allied Drive and other minority housing areas, and with reconfiguration of some bus routes, it can serve most of the west side.

Elver is near Allied Drive like Michigan Avenue is near Cabrini Green! Nice try Don. Put the pool at warner.

Well, I think that the proportion of kids who ride the bus (especially in the summer) is much greater than the proportion of shoppers who ride the bus to stores.
