First signs of spring (2013 edition)

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

First signs of spring (2013 edition)

Postby Henry Vilas » Mon Mar 25, 2013 5:05 pm

As desperate as I am to have warmer springlike weather, I've been searching for signs that the season has begun. I've heard robins call, but otherwise all I feel is cold and all I see is snow. Until today. In a small, snowfree patch in the backyard snowdrops are starting to bloom.

Day lillys and crocuses(croci, prof waggy?) poked their noses out early last week before it got cold again. Just a touch of green in exposed grass. Racoons out out of torpor, casing the droppings from our bird feeders every night now. Canada geese were winging north in huge gaggles today. Willows are getting bright yellow. Cardinals are getting redder. Yippie, here comes breeding season. All the little birdies just love breeding season. Even Mongo like breeding season.

Expanding day length (ex. today: 6:51 AM - 7:16 PM) ? elevated endocrine activity in animals ? rise in libido ? increase in length and frequency of sexual intercourse.

No one really wants to know what goes on at a Young Republican Meet-Up.

I've never heard croci, but I looked it up and it is apparently an acceptable plural (as is crocuses.) Makes sense, since crocus comes from the Greek word krokus (which is the same in German. I'd say "hence the name of the Swiss metal band" except I have no idea why they would name themselves after a flower. Doesn't seem very metal to me.) That said, my position is that since we're speaking English, not Latin or Greek, it's just simpler to stick with English plural construction. So I'll stick with crocuses.

As to the actual topic at hand, for about a week now there's been a rabbit happily munching the exposed grass under one of my evergreen bushes. He makes me happy and has provided hours of window-gazing entertainment for my cats as well.

I can now move one of the trash barrels that was stuck in a huge snow pile.
