The cranes were making a ruckus this morning in Cherokee Park. I turned to pay attention, and just as I took a tally (six), two more flew in. I don't think I have seen that many at once before, at least not there.

Heard some spring peepers for the first time this year. Also spotted a couple of freshly dug badger attack-burrow sites. In a grassy (big bluestem), sand prairie setting. Separated by about 100 yards, each site had two burrows. Kind of cool.

Last week driving on John Nolen over the bay, we saw a muskrat sitting on the ice next to the open water on Lake Monona. The next day, walking on that little drive from the Limnology Building to Mem Union, there was a muskrat sitting on the ice, in front of the open water on Lake Mendota near the sailboat storage area. He dove in when we walked past but was back when I returned.

The next evening at dusk, walking the dog along the Yahara from Jenifer to Lake Monona, I counted five muskrats swimming up and down the river. They were diving, then coming up a few feet away, then diving again. The dog never noticed them.

That was a lotta muskrats. I think they're going to swarm this year.

The willows on the drive to work went yellow-green on Thursday. This morning: big, bright-green buds on the maple outside the kitchen window.

The hops have poked their little heads out of the soil.

Our mint is starting to grow, just in time for mojito season.

Wild catnip is up and growing. Saw my first butterfly, an admiral I think, on Friday. All the male goldfinches have gone from green to bright yellow in the last week or so.
