I feel sorry for the dogs if they aren't being fed. And potato chips don't cut it.

The way this group is described sounds like the beginning of a Law & Order episode.

The NY Times article Crockett posted was excellent. It gave me a pretty good understanding of what the Freegan movement is all about. I still find them a rupugnant bunch. They're squatters, human scavengers preferring to subsist off garbage and carrion, which they would probably argue is otherwise wasteful if not consumed. Of course they're right about human wastefulness, but their reluctance to follow laws and accept the burdens of genuine responsibilty strikes me as rather childish.

Indeed, that was a great article. However, are we sure that our local group is part of the same Freegan movement? Any chance they're connected to Z! and his very public squatting?
(Hm, that came out wrong. So to speak.)

Does this mean our local Children of the Dirt are inhabiting a vacant property somewhere downtown?

Thanks TBP--I don't think I had any idea I was missed :o

Does anyone else think the guy at Warner Park who smacks geese and ladies is part of this group?

There are houses like the one in the article in Madison. Some come, some go, some have been here a long time. But they do share many of the same fundamental philosophical and political outlooks espoused by those interviewed for the NYT piece. They are not necessarily squats (which just means houses that are occupied without rent or mortgage being paid to someone - the American drea, isn't it?) and, in fact, many such setups involve rent being paid on time and by all occupants, with the exception of friends or friends of friends just visiting for a time.

That having been said, the original poster was asking about the young people who are typically known by the self-described and/or more benign term of "travelers," as reported, or as "gutter punks," as another poster pointed out. These are not necessarily the same people who are living in the kinds of communal housing described above; in fact, sometimes the alcohol and other problems that people who are living on the street bring along with them mean they are less than ideal candidates for the communal housing experience. Most places have strict rules about who to allow in as guests ("crashers") and it's a pretty orderly and fair sort of thing. After all, it's people's homes.

It sounds like what you're describing is more Hippie Co-op than Freeganism.

Yes, there are co-ops around town, but not all co-ops subscribe to freeganism (stuff like dumpster diving, having a free store within, being open to crashers, etc.) and some spaces that are not officially "co-ops" operate like the place in the article, more or less.

I hope the pregnant girl has a place to go to for care. I don't know if she plans to give birth in the bush or go to a hospital, but it's really really hard to panhandle enough for the amount of laundry an infant requires.
