Burning Plastic Smell

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Burning Plastic Smell

Postby thurisazlhb » Thu Aug 05, 2010 9:20 pm

I live near East and Emerson schools. I frequently smell a burning plastic smell. It makes me physically ill. Does anyone know what it is? Better yet, where it is coming from?

I have contacted:
The Police
The Health Department
OSHA
The DNR
None of them felt it was something they could help me with.

A likely suspect might be the Madison-Kipp plant, tho' I live just a few blocks north of it and almost never smell anything.

Looking at the map, Emerson is on the otherside of E. Wash. Maybe Oscar Meyer burns some packaging material. I think I remember reading some people's gripes about that.

Might it be Burger King?

I've long noticed that BK restaurants emit an odor that conjures up an image of a plastic bag melting on a hot charcoal grill.

Years ago I worked at National Car Rental on the corner of Commercial and 113 and would often get wierd burning smells coming from that plant across the street.

We could be neighbors. Are you the one that runs that leaf blower for an hour at a time?

There is a foundry on Pennsylvania and 6th and the wind would blow it right toward you. That is my bet.

Never touch the things. I'm one whose lawn is nearing 100% creeping charley and violets. I call it the "Charleyfield".

My partner and I used to smell something like burning plastic regularly around the 800, 900,1000, 1100 blocks of Williamson, Jenifer and Spaight Streets for approximately 5 years. We haven't noticed the smell in about a year though.

The "burning plastic" smell is likely from one the the local coffee roasters in the area, unless you're smelling it at night.

No, I know what that smells like and I don't mind it. This was definitely toxic smelling and very chemical smelling. We would smell it usually on our evening walks, but sometimes in the morning and afternoon also.

I think this might be it. I drive past that place and always smell the same thing.
