OWI in another state; need program in Madison

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

OWI in another state; need program in Madison

Postby zeropoint » Fri Oct 25, 2013 9:12 am

Hi all!

Hopefully this is the right place for this and somebody can help me.

In 2010,I received an OWI in Virginia (where I lived at the time). I was back there visiting this year with my Wisconsin license and had an accident. When the officer came to assist,he looked up my file and saw that they'd attempted to send a letter after my trial detailing what I needed to do,but the letter was returned and I never got it.

One thing I need to do is complete some kind of drug/alcohol program. The problem is,I need to do one here in Madison (where I live now) that will count for Virginia. They had me pay program fees in VA even though I can't take a class there and said it was up to me to find a program here. I don't even know where to begin.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I will also add that I don't have a car anymore and need to go to a program on the busline. I live on the near-east side.

Thank you.

An acquaintance of mine had to complete a program a few years ago, and she did it at Madison College....on the east side and accessible by bus. Check their website or give them a call.

Check with MATC. I think they offer a DUI program.

What would happen if you didn't enroll in such a program? BTW, if you got a first DUI in Wisconsin, it would be just a traffic ticket.

I know the downtown location does. My brother went there for his DUI.

Good luck on getting this taken care of, and may your first OWI be your last.

Check with VA to be sure they will credit you for the class taken at MATC.

Thank you all! MATC would be super convenient. Does anyone happen to know the name of the program or a link to it so I can get more info? Thanks again!

I'm leaning towards a Sheppy alert here. I will carefully monitor the situation.

Call the admin office and ask if they accept registrants to the DUI program without a WI court referral. It's kind of an odd request but the staff at MATC are almost invariably helpful and patient. There might need to be paperwork submitted from VA to get you admitted and then properly credited so you can clear your record.

You could also just never go back to Virginia. Is that an option?

This Sheppy must have been irritating and I will have to look back at that record at some point when motivated.
Although, I did look back at zero's forum posts and find the following possibilities:
A) Zeropoint has been tragically unfortunate and occationally seeks advice anonymously from anonymous strangers. These anonymous strangers have given genuine/thoughtful advice.
B) Zeropoint's efforts are a bit of performance art that mess with the communities good will.
C) B above is true, and the effort of a lurking sockP.

Just my thoughts on this 'business'.

...or zeropoint has lived a life full of unfortunate events and sometimes doesn't know where to turn.

Even if something may seem over the top or odd without knowing all the context, I find it's best to err on the side of compassion.
