Militaristic Rave crackdown in Utah

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Do you think we need more military-style clampdowns on America's youth?

Yes, crush them.

Maybe if they would obey the autocrats more, the beatings would be lighter.

Militaristic Rave crackdown in Utah

Postby Andy Olsen » Thu Aug 25, 2005 7:07 pm

Whoa. Have you folks seen the video from the crackdown on a rave in Utah? Reminds me of an old Clash song. (Clampdown?)

This is out of hand. 90 police in military armor and with loaded weapons storming a gathering of them young people. They cited a county rule requiring permits for groups of 250 or more over more than 12 hours. This two hours after it started.

Here's the video of the SWAT team arriving on the scene and clamping down (Fun site, BTW)

Here are some stories:

Might be a job for Ben Masel. Utah beckons, Ben!

Fear of the RAVE Act already killed the local scene, IMHO.

Here's some more info regarding the permits, and here's a good roundup of all the Versus II coverage.

BTW, whatever happened to the Expo as a venue?

The Utah County Large Assembly ordinance is very similar to the Sauk County Mass Gathering ordinance used to shut Weedstock 5 years ago.

The Sauk County Ordinance was eventually found an unconstitutional abridgement of free speech and assembly. That ruling is now in the hands of the ACLU of Utah.

Utah County taxpayers are advised to learn the lesson of Sauk County. Press their local officials to drop charges now, and seek to settle with the agrieved rave kids quickly, before the Attorneys fees mount. At $300 per billable hour, you're talking real money pretty quick.

I was kind of hoping someone could name the Clash song. Something like "Clampdown" but I keep getting the "Rock the Casbah" in my head.

This wouldn't happen if I still had a turntable. (Those are for vinyl "records.")

"Clampdown" is about neo-fascists. One of the greatest songs of the 80s, it really does't apply to this situation at all.

Not sure what song you are talking about, unless it's "Know Your Rights."

It is Clampdown and it's on London Calling.

You grow up and you calm down
You're working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
You're working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
You made your first kill now

Okay, that ain't it. I'll have to get a turntable. Thanks for the info.

But, I dare say "neo-fascist" is a term that should be reserved for neo-conservatives. More appropriate.

"Police On My Back" from Sandinista?

Well I'm running, police on my back
I've been hiding, police on my back
There was a shooting, police on my back
And the victim-- well, he won't come back

What have I done?

I been running Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, running

(etc.)
