Water, water everywhere (except Texas)

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Water, water everywhere (except Texas)

Postby kurt_w » Fri Sep 09, 2011 10:23 am

Last week it was Vermont, this week it's NY and Pennsylvania. Don't know how much coverage this is getting right now in Wisconsin, but it's truly mind-boggling.

For example:

Binghamton, NY has weather data going back to 1890. The city set its all-time record for daily rainfall just last year, on Sept. 30, when 4.7" of rain fell. That record was obliterated by the 7.5" of rain that fell yesterday.

The Susquehanna river at Binghamton just set a new all-time record (since measurements started in 1847) of 25 ft above baseline. (Flood stage is 14 ft).

That streamflow gauge is scheduled to be shut down three weeks from now (after 164 years of operation) due to budget cuts.

Someone from virginia was quoted as saying that the rain was more like a waterfall than anything else when hurricane hazel of 1954 ran across her locale -- which was noted also for a direct hit on toronto as a strong category b tropical storm or weak category i. hurricane shortly thereafter.

also hurricane irene this year i believe is the first landfall at nyc since 1893, though others came close (e.g. the 1938 long island/new england 100 km/h-forward-speed hurricane, the one that almost turned katherine hepburn into a sex maniac or something.)
