"It's in the pipeline": Madison's man of the year

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

"It's in the pipeline": Madison's man of the year

Yes, it's only February, but James Summers, the dude who cooked himself a meal at Denny's the other day while strapped with a stun gun, is undoubtedly our finest citizen, if only for the response to a question about whether he had a permit to carry said implement:

"It's in the pipeline."

Seems that Joel DeSpain is no longer our little regional secret!

The police report, which, as the NPR news blog points out, is rich with detail and colorful turns of phrase—well worth a read—states that Summers was cooperative until the very last, even framing the debacle as a parable for restaurant patrons:

I don't think it's helpful for folks to turn Jim Summers into a joke.

But, at the same time, it isn't unlikely that his drug and alcohol problems are at least partly the result of people in his life believing they must be their "brother's keeper" - enabling him to continue abusing substances without having to deal with the harsh reality of his own chosen behaviors.

The question, "am I my brother's keeper" has been corrupted from it's original meaning - to the detriment of many of the "kept."

Um, I'm guessing that there may be mental health issues involved that have nothing to do with enabling.

Um, okay. You may even have the qualifications to diagnose - on nothing more than a colorfully written police report - "mental health issues" beyond drug and alcohol abuse.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm just guessing that you may not be as much a part of the solution and not the problem as you may think you are.

I don't know, Meade. You made the statement that some how something Brenda does is part of the problem. Why ask her to correct you. You should either explain the cause and effect your are referencing or correct yourself.

Don't you think?

Good grief, the editorial here http://www.channel3000.com/editorials/3 ... etail.html

says . . .
Editorial: Am I My Brother's Keeper?
It's about mental illness, and it's not a joke.

I didn't make it up.

Then I beg your pardon. You didn't make it up. You just passed it along.
