California youth crime plummets: Marijuana blamed.

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

California youth crime plummets: Marijuana blamed.

Postby rabble » Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:35 pm

Between 2010 and 2011, California experienced a drastic 20 percent decrease in juvenile crime--bringing the underage crime rate to the lowest level since the state started keeping records in 1954.

According to a recently released study, much of that improvement can be credited to the decriminalization of marijuana.

California's drop in serious youth crime has decreased faster than in the rest of the nation.

The study's authors.... assert that only two major factors explain the trend: the loosening of marijuana laws and improvements in the economic well-being of California's youth.

"We haven't seen this low of a number [of drug arrests] since 1970," Sacramento County Chief Probation Officer Don Meyer told Rosemont Patch.

Anyone who's surprised at this please report to the principal's office immediately.

Eliminating speeding limits would cut down on speeding tickets too, I imagine.

Yes those two things are quite similar, aren't they? Lots of people are already serving prison terms for speeding, and so many more people have been hurt because of pot smoking.

It's not a judgement on whether drugs should or should not be legalized, or are worse than speeding. It is a comment on a misleading statistic.

The article said that vast majority of the drop resulted from far fewer arrests for marijuana possession. That is the thing that was decriminalized. Duh.

Oh, then we're in agreement. The youth crime statistics across the country are inflated because of the pot laws and we'd save millions without sacrificing anything if we did this nationally.

Or should I say billions? That's a lot of money to take out of somebody's pockets and put it someplace else
