New process for building solar cells?

Here's a little optimism for a Friday: a new process has been described for building photovoltaic cells. It may allow inexpensive sheets of plastic-based PV material to achieve the higher efficiency of (hitherto expensive) silicon cells.

This is still in the lab-demonstration phase, so even if everything works well, it would take a while to begin mass producing these. But someday it might be possible for factories to churn out wallpaper-like rolls of plastic-based PV film with higher efficiency and lower cost than today's low-end plastic-based PV materials.

Pretty cool concept. They key to the light trapping is the geometric arrangements of holes in the gold film at the surface, right? I wonder if this could be done with a cheaper material (i.e. not gold) just as well. It seems like the key factor is the hole size/spacing (to achieve diffraction/dispersion of the incident light), not the material.
