Popewatch '13

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Ha, from that Wiki article

One day, while mounting a horse, she gave birth to a child.

Not that would make one hell of a Youtube video.

Lovely. Here's Erick Erickson, founder of RedState and prominent conservative pundit:

That lefties are accusing the new pope of handing over lefties to the right wing junta for execution makes me adore the new pope.

The reference is to widespread discussion about what the pope formerly known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio did or didn't do during Argentina's period of brutal right-wing military rule.

More on the pope's past:

A Jesuit priest whose kidnapping by the Argentine military junta decades ago led to strong criticism of the newly elected pope said Friday that he and the pontiff have reconciled.

The Rev. Francisco Jalics, who now lives in a monastery in southern Germany, said in a statement that he had talked with the Rev. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was named Pope Francis on Wednesday, long after the 1976 kidnapping of himself and fellow slum priest Orlando Yorio.

Bergoglio has said he told the priests to give up their slum work for their own safety, and they refused. Yorio, who is now dead, later accused Bergoglio of effectively delivering them to the death squads by declining to publicly endorse their work.

Also this: According to one Argentine human rights investigator who spoke with Orlando Yorio before his death, Yorio believed that now-pope Francis (ne Bergoglio) was actually present during his interrogation by the dictatorship's security forces.

That's hearsay and speculation, so take it for what it's worth (perhaps not much). Likewise, this is not particularly conclusive, but doesn't look good:

[Bergoglio] twice invoked his right under Argentine law to refuse to appear in open court to testify about the allegations [of connection to the kidnappings of left-leaning priests during the right-wing military dictatorship]. When he eventually did testify in 2010, human rights activists characterized his answers as evasive.

{For B-dog}

Butt, you really got to hear it in person.

I don't know where they're going with all this stuff on the new pope, but it seems to me for the college of cardinals to find a pope-candidate with clean hands was close to impossible. Were political crimes deemed less offensive than homosexual activity or covering up for pedophiles? Who knows?

I feel like this whole ship is sinking faster than anybody realizes. Maybe St. Malachy was right.

Francis might want to shake up the Curia, but he nixes nuns who want social justice.

Pope Francis supports crackdown on US nuns

I guess he thinks reform can go too far.
