Drivers in Wisconson traveled 59.617 billion miles in 2003. The distance from Earth to Pluto varies, but averages roughly 3.6 billion miles. There and back would be 7.2 billion miles. Ten times that is 72 billion miles.

My calculation of the average distance between Earth and Pluto is admittedly rough, but the closest answer would still be D.

Michael is right, though he did cut some corners.

A perfect answer would use the actual Earth-Pluto distance as of today, Dec. 1, which happens to be 2,959,134,444 miles. Thus, a round trip would cover 5,918,268,888 miles. The number of miles driven by Wisconsinites in 2003 (which Michael does have correct) is almost exactly 10 times this distance.

(If you want to drive to Pluto you'd better hurry; tomorrow it will be 350,000 miles further away....)

I did say my calculation of the distance to Pluto was rough.... but do I still get that gold star?

After viewing the poll results (see top of thread), you're the only one who gets a gold star.

All kidding aside, that is an astounding amount of mileage. Our kids and grandkids are going to curse our names for wasting all this valuable petroleum.

I'm just curious where that total mileage stat comes from. Anybody?

That seems ridiculously high to me. But then again, my brain has a hard time wrestling with quantitative concepts involving numbers in which commas appear.

From our beloved DOT:

More people drove more miles in Wisconsin last year

It's not your imagination. There are more people on Wisconsin's highways and they're driving more miles than ever before.

According to Bruce Aunet of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Traffic Forecasting Section, total statewide vehicle miles of travel (VMT) went up 1.5 percent last year over 2002.

"Total statewide VMT reached 59.617 billion miles on Wisconsin's 113,269 miles of roads last year," Aunet said. [....]

Can you break out the mileage traveled to Vic Pierce Liquor for late night beer runs from the UW campus?

That road trip to Pluto is one helluva drive, especially with all the potty breaks and stops at Kwik Trip for chips and chocolate covered peanuts.
