The Big Ten Network

Postby Henry Vilas » Tue Jun 26, 2007 3:29 pm

Will Charter carry it or not? Or will it be like the NFL Network, where there was no agreement to place it on Charter's expanded basic?
The college football season is only two months away, but no deal is in place between Charter Communications and the new Big Ten Network to air some Badger games, and the two sides have begun to dig in their heels over access and cost.

The Big Ten Network, which will launch in August, will air the University of Wisconsin's non-conference game against The Citadel on Sept. 15 and could carry one or more Wisconsin conference games later in the season.

The network plans to air a wide variety of Big Ten sports in addition to football and basketball and has carriage deals with DirecTV, AT&T and more than 40 smaller cable systems. But it has yet to reach deals with the four biggest cable companies, including Madison area provider Charter and Milwaukee area provider Time Warner, or DISH Network, the other large satellite provider.

Channels 36 and 46 are still available.

Also, UW football at UNLV will be on Versus. Never heard of it. I'll be at the game, so that won't affect me.

What that doesn't say is hoe Comcast, who stopped the NFL Network, is trying to derail this monopoly as well.
In the end this is going to hurt the schools and the fans.

While Citadel tickets aren't a hot item, and being that college football is played (mainly) on Saturdays, many Badgers fans won't mind going to the neighborhood bar to watch the game. But the basketball season isn't that far away and it looks like at least 20 Badger b-ball games will only be on the Big Ten Network. That might be good for taverns, but it sucks for fans. I can't see many who will want to go out that many times, especially on cold winter workday nights.

The BTN and cable providers are too greedy for their own good. A pox on both sides of this dispute.

Too tall trees and buildings to the south. I'm in a piss poor location for satellite.

I heard some buffalo wings place advertising on the radio. I bet the brat place will too, on State.

It should be over by the first quarter, not really worth it.

Never under estimate the Badgers ability to keep things interesting. Final 45-31.

The problem with satellite is that the regional aspect of BTN's coverage will be lost, unless Dish and Direct TV dedicate more than one channel to BTN coverage. With cable, the BTN feed can include the game of interest for a particular area. But the satellite networks have not announced how they will accommodate fan preferences in their 11 different markets.

Of more concern as the Indiana game approaches, the first BTN coverage that matters, is that the fans are blacked out. The UW gets its money from Fox and shows no concern for the fans who can't get tickets and now can't get the game on cable. Barry seems to have lost touch with what elevated the program, now off in Middleton selling $75 steaks.

You just figured this out?
The days of catering to the fans are loooong gone.

The BTN occupies 3-4 channels on Dish Network every Saturday.

Yeah, another "don't blame us" excuse.
Sheesh.

Everyone is to blame here and the only people that are going to lose are the fans and cable subscribers that don't want the BTN yet will have their rates rise because of it's eventual inclusion on their system.

It's curious that the one thing that letter doesn't cover is why the BTN and, by association, the UW isn't willing to negotiate on what tier the channel belongs on. Funny thing that.
Our way or the highway is not good for negotiations on either side.

As far as the smaller cable providers are concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if the BTN is giving them the signal for free so they can claim a larger subscriber base and use it as leverage against TW and Charter.

Eventually it's power plays like this that will kill cable altogether in it's present business model and if you think you are paying alot now, just wait until you have to pay $10 a month for just BTN a la carte.
