The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pirate - Gay or Not Gay?

Badgers, Packers, Mallards. Paddling, running, golfing. And bikes!

Was the pirate on the old Tampa Bay Bucs helmets gay?

Like Johnny Torch would say - Flame On!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pirate - Gay or Not Gay?

Postby Marvell » Tue Dec 09, 2008 2:29 pm

It was an extremely slow night at The Harmony last night, so I start talking to Charley the bartender.

Monday Night Football is on, and Tampa Bay is playing Carolina. Somehow we got on the subject of the old Tampa Bay uniforms.

"So my question to you, Charley, is this," I say. "Was the smiley pirate guy on the old Tampa Bay Buccaneers helmet gay? I mean, he did have the Burt Reynolds moustache thing going."

"Yeah, but that could be porn star just as easily as gay," Charley noted.

"True," I conceded. "But there's the feather that jutted-out at a rakish angle from his floppy hat; doesn't that seem a little less-than-butch to you?"

Charley snorted. "It was the seventies, man," he said. "People just did that kind of shit."

I pulled the ace out of my hole. "Well, and then there were the tangerine-colored pants."

Charley looked thoughtful. "Yeah, that's a good point," he mused. "Pewter sure as shit ain't tangerine."

Since Charley and I were unable to come to any definitive conclusions on the subject, I'd like to throw this discussion open to the rest of the Foron community. I'm sure many of you have seen the famous Quentin Tarantino monologue from Sleep With Me about the fundamental homoerotic message of Top Gun. This is kind of like that - only involving pirates.

As the (presumably butch) Aragorn says in The Return of The King:

What say you?

A legitimate question, but I'm still trying to answer the first Selleck-themed quiz that came to my attention this week. Once I wrap my mind around that one, I'll begin to mull your gay pirate.

Sure, I say it, you drop a "nucking futs" bomb on me. You say it, and it's too cool for school so long as it's couched in the Numenorean tongue.

Anyway, yes. Flame on. "It was the seventies" is not exculpatory. Have you seen what people did in the seventies??

Anyone familiar with the term "pirate ship"? Anyone remember the bar with the same name?

Case closed.

Is that the place you and former Sen. Craig used to hang out? Was that before or after the toe tapping in the bathroom?

Ugh, Ned decides for ONCE to play nice and not bring teh politx into this, and then you have to go and do it? Shame.

As for the pirate in question? As gay as his cutlass is long.

The experiences I've had in Ybor City are best forgotten. Oh wait, they already are.

That place is what New Orleans used to be.

Verdict - the pirate is gay like George Hamilton is gay, which is to say he is a very happy individual that needs to lay off the tanning.

PS - Craig Finn quotes don't do it for me.

Is that some kind of sexy holiday euphemism?

"Hey baby - why doncha come on over? I've got a fire going in the fireplace, some Barry White on the stereo - if you play your cards right, you might even get to mull my gay pirate."

To which the only reasonable reply is:

Yahrr.
