2012 NL Central

Postby Abdul » Tue Feb 07, 2012 3:57 pm

Hi,

The Super Bowl is over and pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks. ITS BASEBALL SEASON, sort of.

So how to the loyal cheeseheads see the NL Central race playing out in 2012? Being a Cardinal fan I have to feel we have a good chance to be n the reace to the end. Losing Pujols is huge and he cannot be replaced, no more than the Brewers can replace Fielder. You might get some numbers from others, but you cannot just replace Prince and Albert with numbers. Both were monster players who lifted all around them.

Wainwright returns for the Birds giving us a solid rotation. Brewers pitching remains outstadning and you cannot beat K-Rod and AX at the end of the game. The Reds look better, but not better enough unless they get some bounce back years from Arroyo and Rolen. The Bucs have potential but are still two or three years away. The Cubs appear hopeless, which is when they can be most dangerous and Houston will be missed by ua ll next year. They were good for ten or eleven wins a year no matter how bad you were.

So, I see Cards and Brewers fighting it out again with an edge to the Cards because of their depth, which they will need because some of them are on the plus side of 35.

Ask again after the decision on Braun's appeal is announced.

Got to love the Brewer's pitching staff, and that might be enough to erase the loss of Fielder & Braun's potential 50-game suspension. They posted a franchise record for wins last year despite a woefully unproductive & defensively challenged left side of the infield. Also survived losing Braun & Weeks for a good chunk of the season. Fielder leaves big shoes to fill, but Gamel may be motivated to step up with Roenicke & staff behind him. Getting Weeks to survive a whole season and having Hart back in all-star form would certainly off-set Fielder's production.

Yeah. It's about the pitching. For all the talk about run scoring last year, the Brewers lineup was essentially somewhat dysfunctional ... they either scored a ton of runs or none. If people play at their normal levels (including Ramirez showing up), they will offset Fielder being gone. If Braun's out for 50 games, they need to try and play about .500 with the fill-ins.

I don't see anyone else in the division being much improved except possibly the Reds, who followed the Brewers lead and went and got some legit pitching. The Cards also lost an irreplaceable player in Pujols, so they should have the same offensive questions as the Crew. Pirates are the Pirates, which means they'll either build on last year's improvement or completely go in the tank. Astros seem hopeless. And the CUBS STILL SUCK.

Dream on, girlfriend. They're going to embarrass both the Cards and the Crew this year. The dynasty starts now!

Who did they sign this offseason? Ernie Broglio?

Hearing that Braun won his appeal and won't be suspended??

Edit: linky goodness. Probably deserves it's own thread.

Good for the Brewers and good for Braun. Still guessing he's not going to see as many good pitches to hit or repeat his MVP numbers without Prince following him in the batting order. None the less, it gives Milwaukee a reasonable chance to beat a Pujouls/Russo-less Cardinal team. If Cincy improves, they could be the real competition in the NL Central this year.

MLB is classin' it up by being jerks and whining about the decision after the extremely crappy way their whole process has worked in Braun's case. They should maybe STFU and fix their problems so nobody else gets smeared around again like this, because no matter what, this will always be an asterisk on his career.

Braun is back for the entire year, so the Brew Crew looks awfully strong to this Cardinal fan. They will be playing 7 innning games as long as K-Rod is happy as a set up man and if something happens to Axe he can be a lights out closer. Not many teams have two people to do that.

Hart's injury is a minor set back and could turn into an asset if he get's slotted at first base when he returns. Aoki offers solid defense and respectable offense in right and if Gamel can't do the job, and I'm betting he can't, it makes sense to move Hart to first.

I still like the Cards because I think our rotation is actually better than the Brewers. But, with Braun back the race is on and it will be a great summer.

See you at the ball park.

The Cards rotation essentially has the same caveat at the Brewers: Can they stay healthy? For the Crew, Marcum is already a major question mark, considering his late season meltdown and this spring's continuation of his soreness issues.

Luckily, the Brewers have a couple viable backups - Estrada probably deserves to be a full time starter right now, and Parra is supposedly healthy again as well. Not sure the Cards have that sort of depth, unless their always resourceful farm system is ready to cough up a couple more MLB-ready stars.

We might find out about the Cardinals right out of the gate again. Carpenter has a bluging disk in his neck so he's doubtful for the opener. Currently plan is to shift Lance Lynn to the rotation if Carp is indeed out.

Lynn has heat and two good pitches with his change up being under devel;opment. He'll need it if he has to start more than once or twice.

You are right about Estrada, he can be awfully tough, at least as a fill in. He hasn't had to start for long periods yet, but he has the stuff.

I get one "attaboy" for picking Cincy. Best news lately--Headline--Cubs two-hit by Astros to reach 100 losses--TeeHeeHee

It sucks to be a Cub. 104 years without a winning a World Series, but, "Wait till next year! We'll make it 105!!

Which would make it 105 years ago for the Cubs vs. never for the Brewers-- at least the Braves won one of their few World Series during their brief residence in Milwaukee. Another couple of things the Cubs have done, albeit a long time ago, that the Brewers and the White Sox have never done: won three pennants in a row (1906-1908-- and again in 1910) and won two World Series in a row (1907-1908), which must have tired them out plenty since they haven't recovered yet.
