NO Saints smacked!

Postby Michael Patrick » Wed Mar 21, 2012 12:13 pm

That's gonna leave a mark!

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for one year and the team will lose its second round pick in 2012 and '13 and pay $500,000 as a result of the NFL's bounty investigation, the league announced Wednesday.

Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who orchestrated the program, has been suspended from the NFL indefinitely. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis also faces an eight-game suspension and a $500,000 fine.

Seems pretty steep. Goodell is not messing around.

I don't care enough to do the research, and I don't mean for anyone else to either, but can anyone recall off the the top of their head another time someone was suspended from the NFL for a non-drug related offense?

D'oh! Sorry fer the simple question. This decision does seem to be a milestone of sorts for the NFL, and I was trying to figure out how big it was across the history of the league.

The better question is: how many single-season/indefinite suspensions have come from non-drug policy/PED causes? Michael Vick and Adam Jones are the only two that come immediately to mind.

From the NFL's press release:

2. Payments were made for plays such as interceptions or fumble recoveries. All such payments are against league rules. Payments also were made for plays on which opposing players were injured. In addition, specific players were sometimes targeted. The investigation showed bounties being placed on four quarterbacks of opposing teams – Brett Favre, Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, and Kurt Warner. Multiple sources have confirmed that several players pledged funds toward bounties on specific opposing players, with defensive captain Jonathan Vilma offering $10,000 to any player who knocked Brett Favre out of the NFC Championship Game in 2010.

Slap on the wrist.

Sean Payton should be permanently banned from football along with anyone else who participated in the bounty program.

Hypocrisy of the highest order.

Billionaires exploiting millionaires is the way of the NFL. How stupid do they think we are to buy that there's any real interest in keeping the game safe?

The NFL is potentially going the way of boxing if it doesn't get actually serious (instead of a grandstanding suspension of a head coach) about head injuries.

You mean how it's become practically illegal to hit the quarterback anywhere below the knees or above the sternum? Or how it is now illegal to hit a defenseless receiver? Or how kickoffs were moved up to decrease the probability of a return?

the only other thing I can think of was Bill Belichick's spying scandal.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3018338

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for spying on an opponent's defensive signals.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up its first-round draft choice next year if it reaches the playoffs this season, or its second- and third-round picks if it misses the postseason.

Albert Haynesworth was suspended for a helmet stomp. Tank Johnson was suspended for violating the leagues personal conduct code(mainly due to weapons charges, I believe). Ben Rapelisberger was suspended for, um, yeah.
