NFL replacement refs

Postby Henry Vilas » Tue Sep 25, 2012 10:34 am

We was robbed.

But beyond that, I wonder if it is just based on the incompetence of the substitute refs or did money from gambling interests come into play? The replacements know they aren't going to be around forever and bribes can be very big with all the money wagered on NFL games.

On a side note, our own Governor Walker said the replacements must go and the league should settle with the NFL refs' union. I guess he doesn't understand the hypocrisy of his position.

Last play was the worst but every game, all game this has been an embarrassment. I'm not sure I have it in me to not watch but I think that's what it's gonna take.

I would chalk this up to incompetence, not gambling interests.

From Bill Simmons' mailbag this morning:

I am in shock right now. Without a doubt the sickest bad beat in my gambling career which is saying a lot. All I know is that Ref #28 is the one who made the bogus phantom Pass Interference call on Sam Shields on Seattle's second to last drive for 32 yard. He is also the one who failed to see Golden Tate's blatant shove in the back on the final play, and of course he is the one who called the touchdown. It is absolutely impossible for me to stop wondering if that guy was in some way not financially compensated or bribed to affect this game for the Seahawks. I am begging you as a prominent media figure to please bring up this particular individual, Ref #28 somehow on your site and possibly raise some groundswell for an official investigation. This is the biggest injustice possibly in the recent history of sports and sports gambling and it would be a travesty if this guy gets away with it. Please at least mention this in passing somehow in some format somewhere on Grantland. What an absolute joke, again I am in complete shock right now …

Wow, when even wise guys are embarrassed to collect on their bets, it might be time for a change.

Vegas, we have a problem.

A silver lining for downtrodden White Sox fans? Throwing the 1919 World Series (and getting caught at it) is no longer the biggest injustice in sports history and sports gambling? Yay! (Although Eugene did stipulate the _recent_ history of sports). In any case, this Bears fan's deepest sympathies go out to all you PackerBackers.

Sure it does.

Awful call, poorly handled at every conceivable level.

What - players and refs are public employees and the NFL forces citizens to pay taxes?

While Obama has also said the the NFL needs to get the regular refs back, Paul Ryan only attempted to make political hay out of the blown call(s).

They're trying to pick the winners and losers and they don't even do that very well," said Ryan.

Nice haymaking.

Yes.

Hey Henry, do you know why none of the other union members seem to be standing shoulder to shoulder pad in solidarity with the refs? Are there no picket lines? What ever happened to an injury to one is an injury to all?

There is no union strike. It's a lockout by management.

So did you watch the game or not?
