Just swap Illinois and Wisconsin, then you have you have your geographical split.

The problem with the proposal that the Maryland folks claim is the final deal is that Wisconsin gets screwed. Everybody else is sitting fine.

OMG. The Big 14 is actually going to go with geographic alignment!! After so many dumb decisions in college football in recent years, this seems almost too good to be true.

West: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Purdue or Indiana.

East: Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Purdue or Indiana.

If I could ask for one small favor from the football gods, it would be that Michigan State and Wisconsin are allowed a protected rivalry status where they meet every year. The two teams/programs are very similar and have a natural rivalry going.

I'd be surprised if this is the end result, as the East is clearly much stronger than the West. Wisconsin might need that easier schedule in the future, though, if they keep on doing this.

Finally a non-conference opponent that isn't the Little Sisters of the Poor.

The Big 10 is now the Big 1 Little 13. Whatever division that has The Ohio State is stronger.

Otherwise, I disagree that the West is markedly inferior. Illinois, Iowa and even Northwestern have been to Rose Bowl in recent memory. Nebraska and Wisconsin are among the best of the Not Ohio States.

Another thing to consider is that there will be one, two, three or more east coast teams added soon. The first addition will certainly keep Indiana and Purdue together in the West. Subsequent additions will likely move the Michigan teams into the west.

So the balance is not so bad today. And things will likely be quite even in the near future.

Geography is destiny.
