Bob Uecker

Badgers, Packers, Mallards. Paddling, running, golfing. And bikes!

Bob Uecker

Postby Igor » Tue May 28, 2013 11:02 pm

It just does not get any better than sitting on the patio with Uecker on the radio, working a crossword puzzle. No mosquitoes yet. Just perfect.

I probably only do that 6 or 7 times a year, but it is not enough. Uecker is clearly not as quick as he once was, but is still better than 95 % of sports announcers I have heard. Even the commercials that he works in are enjoyable. (How about some of that Krisp Kraut?)

Never heard of him, but I can't imagine he's comparable to Ernie Harwell, in any case.

More important, what does any of this have to do with biking?

It's more a case of cultural illiteracy.

Nobody does a drop-in like Uecker, I'm convinced. I'm not sure Usinger would be a relevant brand without him.

There's a portion of the game when Joe Block essentially interviews Ueck and they talk about baseball history. Last night it was how press boxes have (d)evolved over the years including what kind of food various parks are famous for. I was grinning the whole time.

It's not just baseball commentary, it's oral history and storytelling tradition. Not to get all Harold Scheub about it, but Uecker is sort of a griot.

Why are you so intent on being a dink, fennel? Come on, man. 1) You clearly know who Bob Uecker is, or you wouldn't have compared him to another MLB broadcaster. 2) The Forum section is Sports, Recreation & Biking, so why would you pretend to think that this is a section dedicated to nothing but biking?

Fennel, come on. I don't know anything about sports and even *I* know who Bob Uecker is, more or less. And I know lots of fans love him and he's a great, long-time Wisco character and my mother always listened to him on the radio.

Don't be a pill.

Really, I've never heard of him. I watched sports when I was a kid. Done with that.

I pretty much stopped watching TV in 1976. Now I occasionally watch shows on DVD, which I think is the ideal format. Loves me some Mad Men and Girls.

I'm guessing you didn't see any of the Major League movies then either

My wife is obssessed with Uecker. I'm fairly certain she'd leave me for him in a heart beat.

Super impressive, but irrelevant. Uecker is first and foremost a radio guy.
