According to the polls I've seen, only a "generic GOP candidate" could beat Obama. Real live Republican candidates, not so much. Their character flaws/extremist views seem to get in the way in attracting the independent vote.

The Colbert thing in SC isn't making the GOP, or its chances, look much better:

They've dumbed themselves into a corner where they're totally losing younger, possibly independent voters.

Maybe I have a cynicism deficiency, but yes; I believe that John McCain's advisers added Sarah Palin to the ticket because they wanted to win. Whether this was a 'grownup' move or not is another question.

And I believe this not just for the usual Occam's Razor reasons (although there's definitely that); I can articulate a plausible scenario that explains their behavior that doesn't involve rampant paranoia.

I think it really comes down to the whole 'epistemic closure' business that was roiling the right-wing blogosphere a while back. I think David Frum was absolutely right-on, that the GOP believes its own bullshit at its peril - and, in hind-sight, the whole dogpile on Frum from the rest of wingnut pundocracy was pretty much the platonic ideal of unintentionally proving the other guy's point.

I mean, these people are so far up their own assholes that they think Rick Santorum is electable.

Think about that shit.

Heh...those are the freakin candidates:

Mitt "vulture capitalist" Romney

Newt "open marriage" Gingrich

Rick "don't google me" Santorum

Ron "gold! Gold! GOOOLD!" Paul

Right...didn't pick the "names".

you walked right into that one man.

TROLL ON you craaaaazy Troller!

The "vulture capitalist" remark came from another Republican candidate (Perry). With all the mud slinged by the front runners against their competition, they must be the original trolls.

Oo, and all four candidates are tied for first place with three votes apiece. It's a veritable dead heat of mediocrity!

Or perhaps "The Mediocrity of Hope." As they say in sex ed classes, hope is not a method.

Ouch -- Gingrich appears to have whipped Romney in SC by a bigger than expected margin (40-28). Impressive.

If tomorrow were a work day, instead of a weekend, I would expect a disgruntled Flanders to drop in here, darkly muttering about how this is all due to the nefarious machinations of "the left" and "the media".

Maybe Romney in SC needs to do what we do up here, which is blame People from Illinois.

Makes more sense than him calling Newt an "instrument of the left," which sounds like some kind of witchcraft.

Can you cite your source for Romney calling Gingrich "an instrument of the left"? Thanks.

Many more, Henry? Are you sure about that. More like the only one. Carter Eskew (the WaPo blogger) just made it up. You and snoqueen swallowed.
