What's wrong with the GOP, anyway?

Columnist Richard Cohen offers a thoughtful answer.

This has come up, directly and indirectly, more than once on the forum. Cohen's comments apply quite directly.

"It depends."

Man, so many applicable quotes. I'll choose just one for now:

The Republican establishment that has now risen up to smite the bratty Gingrich has only itself to blame. For too long it has been mute in the face of a belligerent anti-intellectualism, pretending that knowledge and experience do not matter and that Washington is a condition and not a mere city.

We really won't know the extent of the damage that the Tea Party has done to the GOP until this fall. Will Republicans set aside their differences and unite behind their candidate to defeat a common enemy? Will moderates and independents be turned off by the abrasive Teapers and the flood of corporate PAC money?

The way I see it, the election is going to be about Barack Obama, and that's usually the case for a President seeking a second term. If Obama is successful in convincing the American people that the country's woes are largely due to obstructionists in Congress then he'll win and probably have some coattails too. If Republicans can successfully convince people that Obama's policies have failed to dig us out of the recession, or worse yet extended the recession, then they will win. Even with an extremely flawed candidate (which they're pretty much guaranteed at this point).

Eric Boehlert thinks Fox News is what did it.
The truth is, the Republican Establishment all but ceded control of the party, or at least the public face of the party, to Fox News (and Rush Limbaugh) in January, 2009. Party leaders, demoralized by John McCain's electoral landslide defeat, faded into the background and obediently followed Fox News' often-hysterical lead as Rupert Murdoch's cable channel unveiled an unprecedented effort to demonize and delegitimize the newly elected president.

Two years ago, despondent conservative and former Bush speechwriter David Frum, noting the sweeping power that Ailes was accumulating, observed that, "Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox."

Besides, the meme the left is trying to promote is:

Jimmy Carter : Mitt Romney :: Ted Kennedy : Newt Gingrich

Never mind that that one doesn't make sense either.

How do you figure THAT? Harkin only won Iowa because he's from there. I don't think he was ever seen as viable or feared by the establishment, as Newt is. And Clinton never had to engage with him, as Mitt has with Newt.

Jerry Brown, maybe, if you want to go back to '92.

And whereas Dems were concerned that Clinton might have been a little TOO colorful to win the general, Goopers have the opposite problem with Mitt. The guy is inspiring to exactly nobody.

The only meme I've seen promoted by the left (granted, I'm no moderate independent like you, Meade) is that Mitt is a fraud and Newt is, um, grandiose. Run either the $10,000 bet or moon colony clips on repeat, makes no difference.

You all got the syllogisms (syllogisma?) wrong, since you're leaving the current POTUS out of the equation. It should be:

Obama : Hillary Clinton :: Romney : Huntsman

If you want to factor Gingrich into the equation, you're going to have to settle on an angle. Grandiose self-conception? Gore. Moonbeam ideas even he doesn't support? Brown. Effort to destroy his own party in the rush to slake his thirst for self-satisfaction? Lindsay Lohan.

Good one, Detritus. Here's another one (from 2008 and 1976 respectively):

Obama : Hillary Clinton :: Jimmy Carter : George Wallace

No one thought Jimmy Carter had a chance when the 1976 primaries began. Back in 1976, the Democratic Party still included quite a few overt unabashed black-haters. George Wallace, segregationist. Robert Byrd, former KKK leader. Jimmy Carter represented a new breed of Democratic Party racism. It was racism with a smiley face - covert, politically correct, and smug - the bigotry of low expectations. Its legacy still pervades the Dem Party today and is a big reason many modern black Americans have left it.

That sounds about right, but I don't get the sense Huntsman's feet have ever touched the earth.

Ooh. You walked into that one. And you need a comma after "Link."
