Conservatives happier than liberals?

Postby bdog » Tue Jul 10, 2012 9:41 am

Via Althouse

People at the extremes are happier than political moderates. Correcting for income, education, age, race, family situation and religion, the happiest Americans are those who say they are either “extremely conservative” (48 percent very happy) or “extremely liberal” (35 percent). Everyone else is less happy, with the nadir at dead-center “moderate” (26 percent).

What explains this odd pattern? One possibility is that extremists have the whole world figured out, and sorted into good guys and bad guys. They have the security of knowing what’s wrong, and whom to fight. They are the happy warriors.

It could be that conservatives believe that they're in an ascendancy so they feel more comfortable about the current political climate, which makes them happier. I would be curious to see the same study conducted in 2008.

It also doesn't hurt that conservatives are able to completely ignore facts that are staring them right in the face. Liberals would tend to be worried about climate change and corporate influence on our government, also known as "things you ought to be worried about" while conservatives worry about things that don't even exist like when Jesus is coming to take them to heaven or when Obama is coming to take away their guns. I'm not sure that Obama has even uttered the words "second amendment" since he took office, so it's hard to get very stressed about such things.

Lastly, almost every person I know who describes themselves as "very conservative" basically has all of the intelligence of a bonsai tree. I know intelligent conservatives, but the folks who say they're "very conservative" are always a bit clueless, unless you need to know what night "Dancing with the Stars" is on. I chalk that up to Rush Limbaugh, who makes "very conservative" somewhat of a fashion statement.

So conservatives are ignorant, and ignorance is bliss, right? Not so fast, according to a study from the University of Florida psychologists Barry Schlenker and John Chambers and the University of Toronto psychologist Bonnie Le in the Journal of Research in Personality. These scholars note that liberals define fairness and an improved society in terms of greater economic equality. Liberals then condemn the happiness of conservatives, because conservatives are relatively untroubled by a problem that, it turns out, their political counterparts defined.

Imagine the opposite. Say liberals were the happy ones. Conservatives might charge that it is only because liberals are unperturbed by the social welfare state’s monstrous threat to economic liberty. Liberals would justifiably dismiss this argument as solipsistic and silly.

This has little to do with the true ignorance of conservatives today. It's not just a matter of perspective.

Today's GOP preys on the uneducated, lazy and apathetic, telling lies to appeal to the base fears of those who can't be bothered to discover truth for themselves. Ignorance is a cornerstone of their success.

Yes, there are smart, maybe even progressive conservatives, but they sure don't make up the mass that wins elections.

When they're not pissing themselves with fear about all those illegal aliens stealing their jobs, all those dead people voting, all those preverts who want to marry farm animals, Muslim freedom-hating Kenyans with evil Christian ministers in the white house, death panels, government gangs stealing our assault rifles, women not practicing abstinence so they can get free abortions, all those taxes that are killing us, state workers ripping the very bread from our babies' mouths, and runaway air quality regulations that are stifling our great economy, yeah.

They're happy.

Sounds like you may have parasites.

Whether parasites cause liberalism or if liberals are just more susceptible to parasites is not fully understood.

Because she frowns on beta males who expect women to always smile and look happy in order to cheer up beta males.
