Meet Paul Ryan

Postby Shorty » Sat Aug 11, 2012 9:14 am

The republican ticket will be two rich white guys from Northern states. Not much diversity there. But a Mormon and Catholic are unusual.

Charles Pierce wrote:In his decision to make Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin, his running mate, Romney finally surrendered the tattered remnants of his soul not only to the extreme base of his party, but also to extremist economic policies, and to an extremist view of the country he seeks to lead.
...
he really is quite the political coward. (In this way, he is a perfect match for the man who picked him.) He does not have the raw balls to explain to the country that, no, he does not believe in government — not the federal government, anyway, and not as it was originally conceived, as the fundamental expression of a political commonwealth.

Mitt Romney has been unwilling to endorse the Paul Ryan budget.

Will Paul Ryan endorse the Paul Ryan budget?

Conservatives like Ryan not only because of his budget proposal, but also because of his stance on social issues. The conservative Catholic is a darling of the anti-choice crowd because of his views on abortion and birth control. But he is much less concerned about life after birth.
Ryan's own Catholicism became a major issue this year, with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops criticizing his proposed federal budget for what the bishops said would be its adverse impact on the poor.

The bishops cautioned against overreaching budget cuts that endanger "poor and vulnerable people." The bishops' message called on "Congress and the administration to protect essential help for poor families and vulnerable children and to put the poor first in budget priorities."

This pick was made to shore up Romney's base. And in securing his base, he's probably losing whatever support of moderates he might have been expected to have. This pushes Romney further to the right, at a time in the campaign when you gain votes by moving to the center.

It is clear this was a pick made from a position of weakness, not strength.

Maybe I shouldn't call Ryan rich. I'm not sure of his wealth but I suspect it's less than Romney's. But he is a servant of the rich like Walker. I wonder how Walker feels about not being picked? Here are last year's Isthmus cheap shot awards for Ryan:

And an April, 2009 article:

I got my answer on Romney's view of the Paul Ryan budget from one of his campaign spokespersons interviewed on the radio.

To paraphrase, Romney supports Paul Ryan's budget, except he is against any of the pieces that are likely to be unpopular.

Sounds like his view is "evolving".

No further comment needed.
I'm wondering if there is any chance that Romney strategically releases his tax returns at a key point in the election season, and they aren't that bad, making him look good and the Returners like idiots. I would find that entertaining to observe.

Businessman’s contributions to Paul Ryan could draw attention

Ryan accepted nearly $60,000 in contributions from businessman Dennis Troha and his family, records show. Troha was later indicted on campaign finance charges over an Indian casino he sought to open. During the casino application process, Troha said, Ryan (R-Wis.) called federal regulators at his request.

Ryan also supported a bill in Congress that benefited Troha and his trucking company, legislation that drew the interest of federal prosecutors because of the contributions Ryan and other congressman had accepted from Troha and his family.

Romney-Ryan is the Democratic Dream Team.

The Ryan Budget is the motherlode of golden opportunities. Everybody knows that the Democrats will run half-true, exaggerated attacks to persuade stupid voters. This election is all about attracting the thin slice of mostly ignorant people who are still undecided.

Here's the beautiful part: the more you understand the facts of the Ryan Budget, it's extreme, politically unviable nature comes into foucs. The Ryan Budget is just as toxic to smart independents as it is to those coveted dummies. This is icing on the cake.

I was just watching some lady on Face the Nation debating New Gingrich, who is normally a sharp debater. The woman points out that the Ryan Budget doesn't eliminate the deficit for 40 years because it does nothing with military spending, and it drastically cuts revenues. (This is totally different from the more sane Simpson-Bowles approach.) Ryan lowers the deficit completely on the backs of vulnerable people.

Uhh, to make a long story slightly longer: Gingrich's response to an intelligent, detailed attack on the Ryan budget was, "we need to reform the way that the CBO scores bills." That's all he's got. The only defense for the Ryan Budget is to blame the referee.
