Gilligan & Stench on the hustings

Postby Huckleby » Wed Sep 26, 2012 8:35 am

People inside the Romney campaign refer to Ryan as "Gilligan" and Romney as "Stench" (as in stench of death.)

Though Ryan had already decided to distance himself from the floundering Romney campaign, he now feels totally uninhibited. Reportedly, he has been marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, “If Stench calls, take a message” and “Tell Stench I’m having finger sandwiches with Peggy Noonan and will text him later.”

As with the airplane window thing, this "Gilligan vs. Stench" story was intended as a joke ... except this time, by Roger Simon of Politico rather than by Romney himself.

And once again, the joke is too believable for it to be clearly seen as a joke.

I'm googling it even as I type this but haven't yet been able to find out if there is a Craig Robinson and if he really did say "if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him"

I thought it might be the seed of Simon's piece but can't find out if that's made up too.

Here's the deal. Don't fucking write satire unless that is what you normally do. This guy is a dipshit. I'm sick of reporters trying to be like the Onion only to have a major fail and not even be that funny.

This is what I say every April 1. Journalists, leave the comedy to the comedians.

I think the satire stunt is pretty damn funny. I was fooled. So were many excited liberal journalists.

Initially, Paul Ryan's approval rating shot up with me for having a dark sense of humor. But it's pretty stupid to believe that Ryan would say such a thing, guess I just wanted to believe badly enough.

Maybe this all could really happen as black-humor whispered among the campaign grunts.

Craig Robinson wrote:All of that said, I do want to explain what I meant by saying that Paul Ryan would have to wash the stench of Romney off of him if he wants to run for national office in the future.

The “stench” I spoke of is not Mitt Romney or his current campaign. I was instead referring the stench of being associated with a losing campaign. I particularly believe that, should the Romney/Ryan ticket fail, conservatives and Republican activists will lash out at everyone and anyone who was associated with the campaign. Why? Because beating President Obama was supposed to be easy. He was supposed to be the second coming of Jimmy Carter. Essentially, losing has never been an option for Republicans, but as Election Day nears, defeat is a real possibility.
