The largest donor
to either presidential campaign is the casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who's already given $34 million to the Romney campaign and affiliated organizations.
Adelson also owns casinos in Pennsylvania and Las Vegas, but the vast majority of his wealth appears to come from his operations in the Chinese territory of Macau
(a former Portugese colony with an unpleasant reputation).
This summer alone, Adelson's Macau gambling empire has been accused of involvement in prostitution
(which is legal and widespread in Macau), bribery
, and organized crime
. (Adelson's Las Vegas casinos are also being investigated over allegations of money-laundering
Adelson has promised to spend $100 million
on behalf of the Romney campaign this year, a stupendous sum that would be totally unprecedented in US electoral history. Shortly after his nomination as Romney's running-mate, Paul Ryan himself made a secretive visit to Adelson's Las Vegas property
(closed to the media).
What exactly is Adelson buying with this $34 million, or the additional $66 million that may already be flowing?
