Dylan was right.

Meade was wrong.

Althouse was wrong.

The above are facts. This is not a blog.

Today, as some of feel like winners and some of us feel like losers, let us all come together to acknowledge a universal truth: Mark Knopfler is really, really boring.

I most definitely disagree. His musical palate -- sort of Celtic roots music -- was deep and rich and entirely satisfying. (Probably mixing metaphors, but, eh). Eight master musicians playing more than a dozen instruments (some I'd never seen played before) made for some really, really enjoyable listening. If you weren't there, and your only reference point is a Dire Straits MTV hit from 27 years ago, you really don't know whereof you speak or write.

Stu, you are entitled to your opinion, but when your opinion is as boring as I know Mark Knopfler to be, I consider my case made.

My friend described Knopfler's sound Monday night as the kind of music that plays in a fantasy movie when the main characters are riding horses across an open plain. Personally I liked his opening set but a few of the songs strayed too close to jammy for my tastes. The bass and fiddle pluck-down at one point was OK for the first 15-30 seconds but the last two minutes seemed a bit excessive. There were also a couple songs with Uilleann pipes and I am a sucker for that sound.

There's a place for that stuff (public TV pledge season, the aforementioned soundtrack, the tape deck of your doobie-loving uncle's Camry), but it's not my music collection.

I didn't decide that Dire Straits is what Knopfler will be recognized for, I just pointed it out. Clearly nothing he's done in his solo career has eclipsed "Sultans of Swing."

We joked that he was showcasing his work on the soundtrack for The Hobbit.

However, Knopfler has certainly earned the right to compose and play anything he damn well pleases. His stuff is always interesting, even if only for 15 min. or so. I saw Mark in a club in London a few years back with his Notting Hillbillies group and they were jaw-dropping-ly good. So was the beer:) Alas, there was a time i found Dylan to be a boring mass of morose smack-driven monotonality. Now I'm thinking he should be playing the inaugaration of Obama V2!
