GOP wants Democrats to lead on GOP's priorities

Postby kurt_w » Thu Nov 29, 2012 1:15 pm

This is pretty hilarious, IMHO.

The Republicans have been insisting that any bill to avert the "fiscal cliff" has to consist mostly of spending cuts, not tax increases.

But ... when the Democratic negotiators ask them which spending cuts they want, the Republicans suddenly get cold feet. They want spending cuts, but they want the Democrats to propose the spending cuts.

Sorry, guys. It doesn't work that way. The Democrats are not going to negotiate with themselves. If you want to demand that the bill include hugely unpopular cuts to social security or medicare, you need to own that.

You are certainly right that Democrats shouldn't negotiate with themselves, taking the lead on implementing GOP policies. Again.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty confident that enough of the Democratic leadership has concluded that they can't repeat the mistakes of the past four years on this point.

On the other hand, I'm not really sure why the Republicans are worried. To some extent, they have the advantage here because they can just lie about stuff. They could easily sit down and negotiate a deal that involved, say, cuts to medicare and social security, and then turn around in 2014 and run against the Democrats for ... cutting medicare and social security.

Since they have no problem making stuff up, and the media don't generally call them on that (can't take sides, you know) I really don't know why the Republicans are so antsy about this.

Wall St. and the aristocracy know their best chance to pull the rug out from underneath you will come through Obama and everything is set up exactly for that to happen. The fix is in as both parties agree on entitlement cuts. Its us against them, not the donkey against the elephant.
