whither Ezra Klein?

Races for the Senate, U.S. House, etc. and other issues of national importance.

Nate Silver is off doing stats for ESPN. Ezra Klein is building an infotainment site geared to short attention spans. I'm sure he and his partners will make a bundle, like Huffpost, delivering video clips to smart phones.

There isn't enough money in in-depth journalism, I guess.

Nate Silver has always been a sports statisician. His foray into political polling analysis came later.

ya, I know, but point being he was making a valuable contribution as political analyst. Like Ezra Klein, he is lured by the money in entertainment.

I suppose I should give Ezra Klein's venture the benefit of the doubt, but it sure sounds bad.

Ezra Klein's new enterprise is up, it seems fine:

http://www.vox.com/

He took a lot of WashPost's young writers with him. Not sure what they are doing here that couldn't be done at WaPost.

I am already addicted to vox.com. But I rarely go to the new fivethirtyeight. Something about the design of the site just doesn't work for me. Which is funny, because vox.com's chaotic design with the same articles appearing multiple places seems like it ought to be an annoying mess.

Probably once campaign season heats up I will spend more time at fivethirtyeight.

But in the meantime, Ezra Klein's new venture seems to be off to a pretty good start. I wonder how the finances will work out, though.

Vox is fun and I only expect it to get more interesting over time.

I think the WaPo people who left were concerned about keeping their own futures tied to the paper under its new management, which had no track record in publishing and whose direction was (and is) not immediately clear.

OK, it's been a month. I still look at Vox once or twice a day, and often find things to click on there.

But I'm less thrilled than I was at first. They seem to be emphasizing speed, cleverness, and attention-getting rather than accuracy or depth of insight. I've seen too many things there where they were trying to grab your attention with a flashy conclusion that was based on data and analysis too weak to really support it.

Or, tl;dr, it seems a bit shallow.

But I will keep visiting it for now.

Or, as Huckleby predicted months ago:

The format of Vox isn't as bad as I feared, but the site is kind of a big nothing burger.
I can't stand their Understanding the News" tutorials, they're tedious.

The problem is that Ezra Klein doesn't have time to be an analyst anymore, he's managing a business.

Not to be too cynical, they have some good articles there sometimes.
