The OED finally got around to de-hyphenating chick-pea, log-jam and pigeon-hole?

Who knows what new-fangled ideas these crazy kids will come up with to-morrow?

Really? Hyphens make me feel warm and tingly all over!

Without hyphens, one can't tell the difference between an instance of no-nonsense statements and an instance of no nonsense statements. Why leave the reader to guess the meaning when it can be made explicit?

Same for commas:
Do you know what I mean-mean, dude?
Do you know, what I mean, mean, dude?
Do you know what I mean, mean dude?
Do you know what I mean dude?
Do you know what I mean, dude?

On the other hand, when I see a hyphenated surname, I think "talk about a lack of commitment ...."
I mean, shit or get off the pot! A slash works better, anyway, to show indecision: "Jérome Gaufre/Waffle," for example. But "Jérome Gaufre-Waffle"? Yeesh!

What could be more disparaging, after all, than referring to the "hyphenated couple who moved in next door"? And what of their kids? Will they be duty-bound to suffer names freighted with two or more hyphens each? The horror!
