What have you changed your mind about?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

What have you changed your mind about?

Postby bdog » Thu May 24, 2012 6:14 am

I'll start with an easy one: The Eagles

Suck. good. Suck. Not so bad. Frey better than Henley. rather watch Joe Walsh than either one. Indifferent.

also, pizza. I went through a no pizza period from age 6ish to probably 10 or 11. Since then the pizza lamp has been lit.

New urbanism and the old neighborhoods that it's based on. The idea of living really close and front porches and an active street social scene is a nice one but I think in reality, more often than not, it's not that successful. When there's a difference of opinions, and there usually is, it's much more uncomfortable and awkward when you're all close and shit. Growing up, the old couple next door had some ancient beef with my parents from before I was born and they never spoke to us. We would sit on our front porches, 10 feet apart, and never even acknowledge each other. If a ball went in their yard, it was gone forever. It sucked.

I've given it a try and it's been mostly good, but I'm starting to see the draw of just a little more space.

Catholicism, and most of the issues surrounding it.

Cilantro. First encountered it as a young teen when visiting my sister in Madison. We ate at a Vietnamese restaurant and were certain someone had slipped burnt plastic into our spring rolls.

Next encounter was 15 years later, eating takeout from Bahn Thai. Had a cilantro revelation, and now it's one of my favorite flavors.

Marriage: swore I'd never do it, but now 3 years in and blissfully happy and content with it.

Cities: country girl at heart and hated cities. I've grown to appreciate what good they can offer and accept the bad for what it is.

Being spontaneous: I used to try to be spontaneous. Enough said.

Nuclear power. Bad in any situation, maybe not as bad as burned fuels if you store the waste right, probably better than coal, maybe I overestimated our ability to store that waste right.

I used to think Meade was probably a real person, but now I'm pretty sure he's some sort of malignant computer virus.

The Second Amendment. I used to think it was just an embarrassing anomaly in our Constitution, something I had trouble justifying but nothing that occupied much mindspace. Now I'm a Second Amendment Absolutist: I think it absolutely has to go.

Sorry, jjoyce--feel free to move this post into the One Big Gun Thread. Although I have no intention of following up.

+1 what Mini said.

Also, my list includes:

* eating meat
* wearing t-shirts (band t-shirts, humorous messages, etc.)
* Reggae and ska (used to hate it, now love it)
* Dance pop (used to hate it, now love a lot of it)
* Country Music (hated it as a teen, now I love it)

...and most recently, squash. For the first 29 years of my life, I was sure squash was the grossest thing ever, but now I likes it.

It's way better than racquetball, that's for sure.

Light beer. Turned my nose up at the very mention for years. Now it's all I want to drink in certain settings: ballpark, a wedding, grilling.

"Socially liberal and fiscally conservative". I occasionally called myself that in the past, but I want nothing to do with anything "conservative", seeing as how much conservatives have screwed up our country.

--prescriptivist v. descriptivist grammar. I'm pretty strongly in the latter camp now. I'll even use "ain't" in front of my students just to get a rise out of them sometimes. They know what I'm saying, so the language is effective.

Back in grade school I thought girls were icky. But then in high school they became the most desirable beings I could possibly imagine.

Old houses.

I thought I'd always want an old house with "character" but I'm much happier with a medium-age house where things aren't endlessly falling apart.

The wonders of modern medicine.

My mom sits slumped in a chair all day. She lives with constant pain, unable to do anything for herself, and unintentionally, slowly, killing my dad with her needs. Sometimes she just sits and cries. Neither one of them have slept through the night in years. They always look exhausted. This will probably be my dominant memory of them.

Thanks modern medicine.
