Signature moves

Signature moves

Postby bdog » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:23 pm

For some reason I was thinking about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's sky hook today. It was a devastating shot and I'm not sure if anyone else even tries it ever, or at least on a regular basis.

That led me to think of Chuck Berry's duckwalk. As far as I know that is all his.

What others are there?

Moonwalk. That was one hell of a dance move that will live forever in history.

The 2012 Olympics gave us more of that Usain Bolt move as well as McKayla Maroney's unimpressed podium face.

Elmo: I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the goddamn goalie never knew what the fuck hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'm here, sitting alone in my room, and I start crying.
[pause]

Elmo: That's right, I start crying. Because another human being, a species that I happen to belong to, could kick a ball, and lift himself, and the rest of us sad-assed human beings, up to a better place to be, if only for a minute... let me tell ya, kid - it was pretty goddamned glorious. It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.

The Pete Townshend scissors kick and windmill.

Dean Smith/North Carolina's Four Corners.

Larry, Curley and Moe's nose pulls.

Mark "the Bird" Fydrich's manicuring the mound (and the ball).

Man there are a lot out there:)

Charo's "Cuchi-cuchi". More of a phrase/move hybrid I guess.

Johnny Carson's golf swing at the end of his monologues.

Gene Simmons spitting fire. And blood.

Stuart Markowitz' Venus Butterfly (L.A. Law)

Hulk Hogan's Leg Drop, possibly the lamest finishing move in the history of professional wrestling.

A good one, but really more lame than the Mighty Atlas' stepover toe hold? Not to mention Nature Boy Buddy Rogers' Concord grapevine from which he could not extricate himself. The ref had to untangle him from his vanquished opponenent.

Other signature moves (or phrases):

Little Richard shouting "Shut up!"
Harry Caray's homerun call: "It might be, it could be, it is" (which he increasingly used on long outs in his later years)

Gilbert Brown, 'The Gravedigger.'

Also, at Raiders press conferences in the early 80's Lester ('The Judge') Hayes used to end his remarks with the phrase, "So be it."

While Chick made it his, I suspect the duckwalk like a lot of his moves came from T Bone Walker.

It's a great move. MJ didn't invent it even tho' he owned it.
