UW Salaries on-line

Postby Stu Levitan » Mon Jan 07, 2013 1:10 pm

Gannett has compiled a searchable data base for all UW employees. Gee, any professors whose salary we'd like to know ...?

UW salaries have always been public. From the UW website.

* Redbook salary detail (Volumes 2, 3 and 4) can be accessed using any UW System computer at http://systemwide.uwsa.edu/budplan/. Print copies of the Redbooks are located in the main library at all UW System institutions and the central public libraries in Madison and Milwaukee.

Salary information can be obtained by contacting the Human Resources department of any UW System institution. A CD of the Redbooks can be purchased. To file a written request for salary information or to purchase a CD, contact:

Give it up Stu. The shtick is getting old and somewhat childish.

Those idiots at Gannett wrote:To compile an exhaustive database of Wisconsin’s public employees, Gannett Wisconsin Media filed 181 public records requests with government agencies and spent more than seven months, sending hundreds of emails and phone calls to ensure the requests were fulfilled under state statute.

Nothing like wasting effort and money (yours and the public's) to compile and publish what's already compiled and publicly available.

Those of you looking for your next bitch-gripe about how public employees never get anything meaningful accomplished should look to these latter-day, make-work muckrakers who aren't even savvy enough about their own business to know what's sitting right in fucking front of them.

Top Contender for the 2013 Wheel Recreation Award ... and the damn year's hardly even begun.

This is what I get when clinking on that link: Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /budplan/ on this server.

That is the one thing that makes it more difficult. You can only access the redbook from a UW server(never used to be this way. They changed it a few years back). Otherwise you can get it from the library, buy a cd, or go here(which I think is outdated)

Yeah, they started requiring that supposedly to make head-hunting harder. Also because the amount of nit-picking coming from the legislature had reached ridiculous proportions--along the lines of "why did you pay this person $32,500 a year when a similar job in the DMV was only paid $31,900?" Making it a little harder for certain people to manufacture outrage was doubtless part of the motivation as well.

UW employees were also against it. If they applied for another job, the prospective future employer could see exactly what they were making at the UW job. It made it difficult for public sector employees to negotiate for salary when trying to get external employment.

My biggest complaint is that the Gannett database lists salaries in decreasing order so the highest paid employees show up at the top. For example, you click the appropriate box for Professors at UW-Madison, and the first page of results shows you the 20 or so highest paid professors at the University. It's not an accurate reading of the average salary.

I don't see what's creepy about it. It's public information, right? But I don't see why Stu wants to select for only specific UW professors. Look up the salaries of all public employees or look up none. Try to be fair.

It is very sad in my mind that the spirit of many who excel, for all of our benifit, in the public sector has been crushed over the last three or four decades.

Okay but then why professors? Why not administrators, deans and coaches? And why not employee compensation data from each of Wisconsin's 400-plus public school districts?

All employees in the UW system who earn at least 25 thou a year are listed in the database, not just professors. And other public employees will be added later, including public school employees and even those working for the federal government.
