"I was a paid internet Shill."

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

"I was a paid internet Shill."

Postby Endo Rockstar » Thu Jan 10, 2013 10:19 am

And here I've been doing this for free the entire time:
I Was a Paid Internet Shill: How Shadowy Groups Manipulate Internet Opinion and Debate

The “complex debate” part of the job involved a fair amount of additional training, including memorizing more specific information about the specific posters (friendly and hostile) I’d be sparring with. Here, too, there were scripts and suggested lines of argument, but we were given more freedom. There were a lot of details to this more advanced stage of the job – everything from how to select the right avatar to how to use “demotivationals” (humorous images with black borders that one finds floating around the web). Even the proper use of images of cats was discussed. Sometimes we used faked or photo-shopped images or doctored news reports (something else that bothered me).

So I think most people on message boards and forums have accepted the fact that there are a substantial percentage of posters who are shoveling bullshit with questionable motives. They exist in every significant forum on the internet -- including here.

So the question is this, how do forum mods and owners deal with these issues? How do you draw the line between "yeah, they're nuts but they haven't done anything to result in deactivation," and "they're actively and subversively changing the tone of the conversation for financial benefit."

That was an interesting read. Thanks for sharing. I would be curious to see statistics on the number of people who actually do this and how effective it really is.

I'm wondering if there are any suspects right now. I guess it's hard to know. Hey, it could be me. Bwahahahaaahaha.

Now that I've had a chance to read the comments at the original site where it was posted, I have to admit I probably got flimflammed yet again.

I concur - sometimes it feels like certain posters have a sort of hidden agenda or something.

I'm wondering how much a certain someone gets paid by the taco industry.

We were supposed to cultivate friendship with the friendly posters as well as the mods (basically, by brownnosing and sucking up)

Sr. Wack, share your hopes with the world and they will come back to you ten-(taco-)fold.

Keep them to yourself, and they will fester inside of you, like a terrible burrito consumed at 3 AM.

So apparently posting about local politics, guns and flu shots, pays far better than posting about anything interesting or entertaining.

Things are making more sense.

I wonder if it would be possible to pay someone not to post. You know, like the gov't paying farmers not to plant.
