Cultural Insensitivity

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

We just found out last night, too. So now we're going to put a few whole eggs in the chili, to be peeled and served as garnish.

When I grew up (I'm in my mid-sixties) everything shut down between noon and three on Good Friday and because of blue laws, most businesses were closed on every Sunday. While the community I lived in had a large Jewish population (it's nickname was Gefilte Fish Bay), only Christian holidays were thus observed.

Do we really want to go back to those days?

Oh good point, Hen V. Because none of us wants to go back to those days of onerous blue laws, we must never show sensitivity to Jewish cultural practices. Instead, we should purposely schedule public events on Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Chanukkah in order to maintain the wall of separation between church and state and to show those religious nuts who's boss.

By the way, Hen, have you noticed how late the UW and area schools scheduled spring break this year? Do you wonder why?

I agree with Henry.

On the other side Meade agrees with Stu.

So Henry and Bdog -- you believe that a Jew should be forced to choose between their religion and participating in the political process. Good to know. You also think the City should reverse its policy and make me choose between my religion and participating in government, too?

So Stu and Meade you believe that someone with unpopular religious beliefs should be forced to choose between their religion and participating in the political process. Good to know.

As long as it's someone else's religion it's all good huh?

Like I said, I'll be watching the April meetings. Landmarks in particular.

Well, this being America and all, I don't believe Israeli Independence Day qualifies as a religious holiday. (I know, it sounds so much more sacred when you use the Hebrew, right?) So I expect LC will meet on April 15.

But thanks for playing.

Idiot.

Ah...it's only the "American" religions that are important. Who knew, Archie Bunker was in our midst the whole time.

You're an arrogant, culturally insensitive asshole.

Again, Israeli Independence Day is not a religious holiday. Is that really so hard to understand?

Is it really so hard to understand that it's fucking ridiculous for you to have to look it up in the first place????

How many days are going to be left to meet if you have to satisfy the requirements of all religions? It's just plain stupid.

Best to just leave religion out of it, alltogether.

So, for the record -- do you believe the city should reverse its current policy and allow government meetings to take place on important religious holidays?

Who gets to decide that? They're all important to people observing them are they not?

Is it ok to be culturally insensitive as long as it only affects a small number of people?

IMAAO(*), everybody should be "forced to choose". Government, local and otherwise, should not take into account any religious holidays. If you can't make it - because you're praying, or your kid is in the Easter parade, or you're getting drunk at the office party - that's your business.

Is Good Friday a really special "holy" day for Christians, that should be untainted by civic action? or just an excuse to take a long weekend? I think that depends on the Christian. But its not really a decision the city should be making.

As a side effect, the atheist/Hindu axis will really shake things up every December 25th.

[* In my admittedly awesome opinion]

( I see that bdog sums it up: "best to leave religion out of it" )

This point has been made repeatedly, but maybe we should get specific, and suspend sarcastic wise cracks.

What are the important religious holidays? Google tells me these are the major Islamic holidays for 2013:
Jan 24, 2013 Thursday Milad Un Nabi
Jan 29, 2013 Tuesday Milad Un Nabi (shia)
Jun 05, 2013 Wednesday Lailat Al Miraj
Jun 23, 2013 Sunday Lailat Al Bara'ah
Jul 09, 2013 Tuesday Ramadan (start)
Aug 03, 2013 Saturday Laylat Al Kadr
Aug 08, 2013 Thursday Eid-al-fitr (end Of Ramadan)
Oct 14, 2013 Monday Waqf Al Arafa - Hajj
Oct 15, 2013 Tuesday Eid-al-adha
Nov 04, 2013 Monday Hijra - Islamic New Year
Nov 13, 2013 Wednesday Day Of Ashura

Is it realistic to not have civic activities on these days in Madison?

I suppose it depends where you live. In the Northeast U.S., it probably seems natural and reasonable to work around the major Jewish holidays. Where do you draw the line in Wisconsin?

Pastafarians celebrate every Friday as a holy day.
