Midwest Gaming Classic - Anyone Goin'?

Wiis, PlayStations, iPads, blogging platforms, Facebook and anything else worthy of buzz in the digital world.

Sorry, that was a bit uncalled for, and I apologize.

OddConn probably shoulda had its own thread though. it came and went and I didn't even realize.

PC & tabletop is very much divided from console and arcade gaming though.

This reminds me of a Party Down episode.

This geek is very bad with women, and his friend tells him to just "be" and once he finally figures out what that means - it actually starts to work. He says he's way into Sci-Fi - and this porno star chick says she is too - she is totally into it. Then she mentions LOTR and something else - and he goes off on how he is hardcore sci-fi so fuck all that kiddie fantasy shit and she storms off.

Deja vue!

This is like meeting someone who says they love music, and you say you like rap, and they like country and then you can't get along.

OMG! People have different tastes! How will we ever get along?!?

Yet, both rooms will be filled with mouth-breathing, asthmatic, virgins.

How odd is that? Groups so alike are so divided.

I met plenty of cool people at the Midwest classic, and nearly everyone I went with brought their girlfriend or boyfriend along.

But I guess its funnier to stereotype!

OddCon did perpetuate some nerd stereotypes, I'm afraid. Despite excellent John Kovalic-drawn posters beseeching gamers to bathe, many felt they were above the law of hygiene.

I like digital AND analog gamers. It's Shipley's self-aggrandizing that I find poorly representative of Madison geek culture, and I heartily deny the titles and expertise he assigns himself. But in response I acted like a dick and behaved similarly divisively. I'm ashamed. (But I promise you, I showered today.)

Sorry, Shipley. Someday I will introduce myself, shake your hand, buy you a drink, and talk to you face to face about how I'd like to be represented. 'Cause what you do on TDPF and LJ ain't it.

I do not in any way shape or form pretend to be the representation for the geek crowd in Madison. this is a highly diverse city and my love of a few action figures, movies, and games doesn't compare to whats available and popular.

Also, I feel like I should note that for every 10 stories or so I pitch, only one even gets considered. Oddcon, Free Comic Book Day, etc... I'd like to cover a more diverse community but I'm not the one who makes that call. If you want to be represented differently, the Isthmus mast head has a list of names of people who can be swayed to do so. So when I review that Wolverine game next week, I'm doing it because its a product of Madison, not becuase I think its the first game worthy of discussion this year.

I pimp stuff on TDPF and LJ because its an outlet to a community, I'm self promotiing and nothing more. Like a beloved local news anchor, if offered a bigger job in a bigger city, I'd be gone in a heartbeat. I care a lot about the community here, but I also see its healthy enough to survive without being pimped in local media by the likes of me.

Oddcon didn't seem to have the crowd like MGC but still fun nevertheless. More of the geeky-gamer-D&D crowd really. Seeing that headache I had the morning after playing COD4 is anything to go by.
