Lithium batteries as possible fire hazard

Postby Shorty » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:37 pm

Should I be concerned about the lithium batteries inside my cameras, cell phone, and mp3 players? Could they start a home fire?

"Unlike other kinds of batteries, some lithium batteries contain metal that will spontaneously ignite if exposed to air. Also, the positive and negative poles in some lithium batteries are close together, leading more easily to short circuiting, which can cause a fire."

I'd say that you should try and keep them out of fires.

Aside from that? It's a few years too late to be worried. Any non-luddite is surrounded by them at this point, and we seem to be avoiding random conflagrations. (Well, aside from the various recalls of previous years...)
