Verizon 4G coming to Madison and Milwaukee

Postby Shorty » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:47 am

I may switch from Charter internet if this is affordable. I wonder if the other providers (AT&T, Sprint, US Cell) will have 4G here, too.

Are they limiting the data usage for 4G? The 3G broadband cards have a limit of 5GB. I love the idea of bring my internet with me, but I stream too much video for a 5GB limit. I have used a 3G card before. They are too slow for everyday use but nice in a pinch.

The term 4G actually means something, and none of the carriers touting 4G service actually meet those standards.

Following a detailed evaluation against stringent technical and operational criteria, ITU has determined that “LTE-Advanced” and “WirelessMAN-Advanced” should be accorded the official designation of IMT-Advanced. As the most advanced technologies currently defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as “4G”, although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed.

I can wait.

Data caps are alright I guess on my mobile service but would never be acceptable at home. Keep yer Charter. Switch to Verizon for your cell (they'd better have an iPhone 4G on the way).

The rumors are a Verizon iPhone announcement after CES. It probably won't be 4G though until next year or possibly July. I've been waiting patiently for a Verizon iPhone but I'll probably be too impatient to wait for 4G.

OK the carriers have come up with their own 4G definitions:

But if it's 10x faster than 3G that is good enough for me.

Hope so.

My 4yo Moto Razr is probably the oldest working cell phone in this city.

None of the carriers have even decided how they'll be routing voice traffic over their "4G" networks, yet.

So, it's just another radio to suck your battery dry that much quicker. I'd rather just count on the fact that I've got wifi most any place where I spend much time.

You might want to give it a week or two to see if they've got the kinks worked out. iPhones generate a huge amount of cellular traffic and it's entirely possible that we'll see the Verizon network choke under the stress, much like AT&T does in larger cities.

Verizon's iPhone won't run on their 4G LTE network! It'll be 3G just like every other iPhone! You won't be able to use data and voice simultaneously because Verizon's network doesn't allow it!

This phone is billing news only. There's nothing technological worth unfurling banners for, unless a bunch of people jump ship from AT&T and the level of service goes up for those who remain, thanks to decreased stress on the network. Then it'll be great for me.
