Convert hard drive from usb 2.0 to 3.0

Postby Shorty » Sun Oct 16, 2011 6:55 am

I have a Toshiba external hard drive with usb 2.0. Is there a way to upgrade it to usb 3.0 with a software or firmware update? Or do I need to buy a new hard drive that says it is 3.0?

With software or firmware, I don't think so, but you don't need a new drive. The drive itself has nothing to do with USB connection speed; that comes from the connection in the enclosure.

Here's a link to what you're looking for:

This is just a random pick for an example. I haven't used that particular product / brand, so DO NOT take this as an endorsement. There are a lot of manufacturers out there, so do a little shopping before you make a purchase.

Yeah, it's a hardware thing. Good news is that hard drives are pretty cheap now.

Can I ask why you need usb 3.0? I'm pretty sure it's backwards-compatible, so a 2.0 external drive should hook into a 3.0 port or you might need an adapter.

But like Athena said, new drives are cheap (and they keep getting cheaper).

Write "3.0" on top with a sharpie. Close your eyes and imagine!

Thanks for the tips. Azul, thanks for the Hard Drive Enclosure link but my hard drive is not a 3.5" SATA. It's a portable Toshiba.

Green Union chair, I would like usb 3.0 for the faster speed. Yes usb 3.0 drives ares backwards-compatible, but I don't think my 2009 PC has a 3.0 port. It sounds like a card needs to be inserted into the PC to use 3.0:

SATA is a drive type, not a brand name. Your drive is probably a SATA or an IDE - inless its a mini-drive. They make enclosures for both. Your portable drive is a hard drive in an enclosure. You just have to rip it open, find out the drive type, and buy the appropriate replacement enclosure.

Or you could look up the specs to find out, but ripping things open is much more fun.
