Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Postby Shorty » Thu Nov 24, 2011 8:24 am

Are you going for any Black Friday deals, or boycotting the whole thing? I will skip BF and wait for Cyber Monday.

I have been thinking about buying locally. Maybe a sixer of the Kiss the Lips IPA from Lake Louie.

I've seen two suggestions already to rename the day:
Black Pepper (spray) Friday
National Day of Spray

I am touched by a quote in an article I ready recently, "When you are pepper-spraying people in order to get a video game console, your priorities are screwed up and your kids are doomed."

A fine idea when lower-cased. I've not shopped the Friday after Thanksgiving since before adbusters was a pretentious gleam in Kalle Lasn's eye.

Totally! I was into being over that band before they were even born.

Pepper spray? Oh now I see about it here:

http://news.yahoo.com/much-crazier-blac ... 56950.html

'A woman turned herself in to police after allegedly pepper-spraying 20 other customers at a Los Angeles-area Walmart on Thursday in what investigators said was an attempt to get at a crate of Xbox video game consoles. In Kinston, N.C., a security guard also pepper-sprayed customers seeking electronics before the start of a midnight sale."

Cute, but have you ever listened to Lasn? The guy leaves a greasy, self-important film on any idea he gloms onto, including the good ones (like sitting out Black Friday).

No, I haven't.

I hadn't even heard of the guy, and the few times I've seen Adbusters on a shelf, I remarked that its price was clearly not aimed at my demographic.

If you mean to say this guy caught a bourgeoning wave of awareness and took credit for its insight – that wouldn't surprise me. But I do appreciate that he/they/it made a bit of noise that needed making. (And have been doing so for quite a long time, by news cycle standards.)

Black Friday sales up 7% this year. So much for the boycott.

Back in the 70s and 80s, Black Friday was about getting a deal on that "one toy" for your kid before they sold out. My mom had to get up at 5 am, head to Kmart, and wait in line to get my little brother the latest toy for that year, whether it be one of the Star Wars toys,
GI Joe, or a He Man character. I think one year I got a real Cabbage Patch Kid and I was thrilled. The last time I remember this happening it was over Tickle Me Elmo, but then again I don't have kids, so I'm out of the loop.

Advertising has consumed Americans' lives. In Brazil there is a ban on billboards and outdoor advertising. How awesome would that be?

I fell into the Christmas hype a few years ago after my dad passed away. Buying presents seemed like the only thing we could do to get through the holidays. It made me feel good to give my mom diamond earings, but later when my credit card was maxed out, the regrets came. Now we set a limit each year on how much we can spend on each other.

I love to shop locally, esp. the Wisconsin artists and sometimes Esty. I see something at an art fair now and say, that's totally my mom, she will love it! And she does. There are many holiday art fairs this weekend and next in Madison and the surrounding areas. Check them out! Buy locally and support our artists this holiday season!
