How many Meetup groups are you in?

Postby Shorty » Thu Mar 29, 2012 7:40 pm

I'm in 25 meetup groups but some I have never participated in. The biggest ones I am in are Energizers, Forever Young, and Madison Area Outdoors. How about you?

So none of you are in meetup groups? Or just don't want to admit it?

I went to a Howard Dean meet-up group in 2004. Haven't heard of them much since.

Just one or none? What do you people do for a social life?

Make friends the regular way, I suppose.

Pub trivia, bowl, church, play cards, softball, dog park, have a beer with the neighbors.

Neighbors, friends, neighborhood orgs, fellow hobbyists, family, volunteer, internet porn.

I'm just kidding about one of those.

But you know, that's largely a lost art. I keep looking for it in my sock drawer, to no avail.

Just need to summon the right spirits, I guess.

Same as previous forons who follow their interests. I got the nicest compliment from a neighbor who said I made them feel better just by talking with them. I just retired and I'm having a good time.

Igor: "Pub trivia, bowl, church, play cards, softball, dog park, have a beer with the neighbors."

Pub trivia and playing cards can be fun but have not worked well for me. They are sedentary and require a group of friends willing to meet at the same location and schedule, which I've never been able to work out.

I do enjoy some bowling and softball because they are more active. But they aren't a great cardio workout and leagues and playing on a regular basis have not interested me, I guess because they get too boring and would cause injuries (bowling repetitive stress). Volleyball, tennis, golf, biking and hiking are more enjoyable to me and have helped me make friends.

Dog park, and beer with neighbors are out. I don't own a dog and have never been much of a beer drinker. Most of my neighbors aren't sociable with me.

Church groups have given me mixed results. Some fun times but some boring or painfully awful experiences with the Bible beaters who tend to be far right Republicans who want to argue creationism over evolution with me, and tell me how great Rick Santorum and Scott Walker are.

Neighbors, neighborhood orgs - again, you must be someone with better neighbors than me. My neighbors keep to themselves mostly and I'm lucky if they will say Hi to me.

Fellow hobbyists - I don't have the time for many hobbys but have had some luck meeting friends with the few hobbys I enjoy.

Volunteer - just don't have the time and energy for that. I like to relax and have fun on weekends, or do chores like cleaning and shopping. Not do more work for no pay.

Friends - if I had a lot of friends I wouldn't need meetups. Madison has always seemed like a difficult place to make friends, maybe it's me but I like to not think so. The not liking beer, bars, and church groups seems to big strikes against me, since that seems to be a lot of what social life in WI revolves around.

Family - yes relatives are good especially on Holidays.

Yes, neighbors. Best neighborhood I've ever lived in. It was part of the reason we bought here on the near east.

I don't put a lot of time and energy into the volunteering. About the same as I'd put into a meetup group. "Volunteer" means donating your free time. If I don't have the free time for X, I don't volunteer for it. It ain't hard. I just keep up with what's needed and do what I can without overextending.

And the volunteering means meeting new people, and some of them become friends, and then we do stuff that isn't volunteering. That's kinda how it works.

One thing I can say about how to make friends is to be really predictable. 90% of it is showing up, in other words. If you have a hobby or interest show up wherever you do it, repeatedly and regularly. Talk to the other people who are there (you get to talk about the hobby, obviously), be helpful, be sociable, and be patient.

This is the dog park principle, basically.
