EXTRAORDINARY RENDITIONS opens Saturday Oct 10

Postby Flattop » Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:12 am

Since 9/11/2001 the U.S. Empire has been engaged in a “war on terror” against Islamic fundamentalism.

Both sides in this “war” have used religious justification for the most heinous of crimes; mass killings of innocent civilians, torture of detainees, and summery executions. Fundamentalists of the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have rejected traditions of peace to wage “jihad” and “just war.”

As citizen artists in an empire we feel compelled to protest our government’s criminality and the failure of organized religion, and civil society, to speak out against these atrocities.

During the Middle Ages, Christian adherents staged “passion plays” to re-enact the torture and public execution of Christ. In modern times, activists have re-imagined the “Stations of the Cross” to highlight contemporary human suffering.

As visual (and theater) artists we intend to use the metaphor of “The Stations of the Cross” to demonstrate against illegal government and unholy religion in the “war on terror.”

Through the use of (performance and) visual art we seek to provoke public debate and to put pressure on our failed institutions.

Artists include: Steve Chappell, Michael Connors, Pamela Cremer, Lester Dore, Michael Duffy, John Hitchcock, Mike Konopacki, Colm McCarthy, Quincy Neri & Miguel Peña.

Opening reception with the artists from 5pm to 10pm on Saturday, October 10 at the Common Wealth Gallery, 3rd Floor, 100 S Baldwin, Madison, WI.

The exhibit runs through Oct 24.
