The Ides of March 2007

Postby TheBookPolice » Tue Nov 20, 2007 8:50 pm

What happened in mid-March 2007 that resulted in every non-poll thread prior to that date getting deleted?

The sociological insight is still valuable, but what is it about poll threads that spared them from the Forocalypse?

Huh!?! I actually didn't notice that in my recent thread resurrection project, but I did think it odd that the dates of the threads would jump around wildly. Ya know, the oldest thread would be from 2003 and then there would be a six month gap, then another thread would only have an old post back to 2005. And now that I think about it, I'm surprised that the boredom I had to resurrect old posts didn't lead me to notice that only old posts with polls existed. Weird.

The oldest non-poll post I can find so far is from March 12, around 11 in the morning.

Not long ago we did a sweep where we deleted all threads that hadn't been active in 240 days or something... not that I have any idea how to operate this goofy-ass software.

There is something about threads with polls, though, that seems to make them immune to the purging process.

So today's lesson is: If you post a thread to the DPF, and you want it to last forever, just add a poll to it.

There is also a kinda-sorta archive at the wayback machine. More of a snapshot at various moments in history. It seems to have much less information today than it did a couple weeks ago... Also, it used to go back to 1999 and included a very illuminating post by jjoyce about his feelings regarding alt-country. Wish I'd saved that..
