You're a GAMER geek. That's a very specific subset of geek.

Careful there, youngblood--there's some folks around here that would clean your clock in an actual geek competition.

Don't get cocky, kid.

Do I need to be challenged to a trivisa contest in the realm of sci-fi fantasy and caddyshack quotes? Bring it.

As for flashing firmware, thanks but no thanks. I came close to modding my original xbox, but ended up trading it in so it didnt' matter. THe current xbox 360 has an alarming failure rate, and I'm not doing anything to void tha warranty on this box.

I can't say I ever wasted money on a game and theres few I regret purchasing. I rarely demo or try before I buy, I just read a LOT and get a consensus of the editorial community before I buy.

Now I've rented a lot of duds that for sure, but gamefly is relatively cheap...

I'm going to beat this thread up and take it's lunch money. Anyone know anything about PS3 Mods? I would really like to have a bunch of emulators at my fingertips.

Ship,
agree to disagree on the research.
I do a TON of research plus I'm friends with some developers in LA and Redmond and they give me the unbiased scoop.

As we learned with Gamespot this past year most game reviews are not honest due to pressure put on reviewers by their marketing and advertising departments.

Plus there's the reviewers own bias that figures.
He/she may love RPGs, but hate sports yet he/she still has to write a review of FIFA09. That's rarely a good combination.

In fact the Isthmus is one of the few places that I feel like I get an honest, if not abbreviated review.

As for the perils of flashing...it's a whole different animal than the Xbox.
You literally pull the drive out, hook it up to a SATA connection on your PC and run a program. That's it. No threat of bricking the box.
As for the RROD...proper ventilation is all it takes.
I've got two 360s. One is an Elite from this year, one is almost 2 years old. Never had a problem, and even if I did I don't have to send it to M$ to get the RROD fixed. Cost you a $100 max from numerous reputable repair shops on the web.
There's even one in Madison!

I've already had a red ring once, currently on a refurb. Looking to replace my box with an elite soon since I'm also nearly out of hard drive space (30 XBLA games and 100+ rock band songs, various map packs...)

I realize critics have their own biases, and I listen specifically for that. If Shane Bettenhausen says a game is good, it probably is for people who like those kind of games, but not for me since our tastes differ. I tend to think I get a fair review from Kotaku as well. EGM/1UP have some of the better critics in the industry but if I want the real scoop I listen to their podcast. They start with a roundtable on what they've been playing and its pretty unfilitered. If somone says they're playing the same game for more than 2 weeks, chances are its good.

I also use gamerankings.com. not a fan of number scores, but a good game will rise up. Never trust the official magazines, and try to find independant sites or blogs with like-minded editors. I do the same with movies. if John Campea says a movie is worth seeing, it probably is, my tastes are much like his.

Theres no perfect way to keep from buying a bad game, but the only regretful purchase I've done on 360 is Transformers and Spider-Man 3. The first was unavoidable since I've proven i'm a damn drone. the second was plain stupidity. the game was B-A-D. and the reviews said so. But SM2 and Ultimate SM were good, so I ignored the critics.

I bought my modded box after getting stuck with Force Unleashed.
Lousy game.

Excellent example: incredible demo! lousy game. Force Restrained.

Perhaps this ruins whatever geek cred I've got but: STAR WARS SUCKS. Its sucked for 20 some years, and even the originals weren't that good. in the last 10 years theres been 4 bad movies, 2 laughable animated series, a dozens of mediocre games, hundreds of action figures that offer too little detail or articulation to be worth displaying or playing wtih, and of course enough bad books to make Ray Bradbury giggle as he burns them.

The only defense anyone can give of Star Wars is Empire, which had the battle of Hoth and the Vader march. Other than these two entries to popular culture, Star Wars be damned.

Except for

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
and
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy,

I agree with you on most Star Wars points.

Back to the topic of Gears 2..

Holy moly.

Gears 1 just earned a permanent spot on the shelf, because its OBSOLETE. Story, acting, action, pacing, gameplay, options, sounds, visuals, feel, multiplayer. Everything is better. Epic just earned another Game Of The Year.
