I need to learn some geography. Any book recommendations?

What books, zines or other pulp are you reading? What aren't you reading? What should everyone else read?

I need to learn some geography. Any book recommendations?

Postby auntgoodness » Thu Nov 20, 2008 3:12 pm

Hey forons. I want to further my knowledge of geography, partially for my job, partially just so I don't feel like a dumb American when I hear a country name and can't place it.

I could start with a coloring book, or someone once recommended keeping an atlas in the bathroom...

But, I have this idea that there must be a book out there that gives a little interesting world history along with some maps. Maybe even something about the evolution of the "global marketplace" or empires and such.

Of course I could JFGI or do some research on Amazon, but I thought someone on the DPF might have a favorite to recommend. Whaddya say?

Of course.
Somewhere out there is probably a "Complete Idiot's Guide to Brain Surgery"

Some of those Complete Idiot guides are better than others. Did you read that one? If so, did you like it?

All snark aside, I'm a huge map geek - so I would go with the atlas in the bathroom. And many atlases will have a 'World History in Maps' section in the back.

But perhaps more to the point, there are 'Atlas(es) of World History.'

From The Google: 510,000 hits on "atlas of world history.'

How much is it worth to you? This one's expensive, but pretty darn thorough:

You must not be a complete idiot then.

Perhaps you're a dummy, like the Rest of Us!
If so, this one should work for you:

Thanks for the ideas, folks. The more I look into this the more I think I want something like a world history book. Along with an atlas and the online resources you guys recommended I think I am going to start with The Discovers by Daniel Boorstin. I really need stories to help me remember names and places, and that should at least give me a start. And as luck would have it I have already borrowed a well-worn copy from a well-read foron!
