Trees - overrated or just me?

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Trees - overrated or just me?

Postby lolagirl » Sun Nov 30, 2008 2:30 pm

Finally made it to Trees this weekend and, frankly, I was really disappointed. My meal was served a touch cooler than lukewarm. When I mentioned that to our waitress, her response was "Well, that's just the way it works when there's a big table" (we were one of 3 tables with more than 4 people). The vegetables were julienned zucchini and summer squash that were so over-salted as to be inedible (not to mention - why summer vegetables the end of November?) The rice pilaf was just plain awful; a mushy pile of beans and white rice that tasted as though it had sat in a steam table for a few days. I ordered the flat iron steak, which was Okay (apart from being cool) and served with a very, very overly sweet sauce of chipotle, cranberries and cherries. It overpowered the meat. I will say the place is gorgeous and the prices are quite reasonable. So - was I just unlucky, or is this another instance where local food reviewers seem to decide a place is great regardless of the actual quality of the food?

Gotta ask: uh, where?

77 Square reviewed it. Other than that, I find no recent "ratings" to judge over- or under-ratedness.

I will say, upon inspection of the online menu, that outright copying of other restaurants' menu items is a little weird. Like that Northern Bay golf course that has replica holes of high-profile courses.

Here are links to the two reviews that appeared in TCT and SJ

http://www.madison.com/archives/read.ph ... 090018.php
Both appeared in Oct and were quite favorable.

What menu items are outright copied, and from where?

Per the online menu,

Saganaki: Greek Islands, Chicago
French onion soup: Antoine's, New Orleans
Beef Wellington: The Quorum, Denver (closed)
Wiener and Pork schnitzel: The Berghoff, Chicago

The 77 Square review points out this oddity, referring to it as "paying tribute." My kneejerk reaction would be to call it something less flowery, but at least they're up-front about it.

I see--it's explicit. Thanks.

Regarding the copied recipes, I think it's kind of cool that they give credit where due. But I wouldn't want to see it on more than a handful of menu items.

I wish I could search for a similarly kind word about their logo, but... yeesh!

I just read an article about a recent finding that plants (including trees) release methane, thereby perhaps contributing to global warming and/or climate change.

Fucking trees.

Well, and then there's that one Rush song. And sometimes they fall on lumberjacks.

Honestly - there's just a whole lot of reasons to hate trees.
