Monroe Street Bistro - worst dining experience

Monroe Street Bistro - worst dining experience

Postby redrose » Mon Dec 01, 2008 4:44 pm

I went to the Monroe Street Bistro the other day for dinner and had quite the horrible experience. When we first arrived, everything was fine. It was a very cold night and the atmosphere was warm and inviting and our server seemed pleasant. Then are dinner arrived (surprisingly fast actually) and it was awful! The steak was completely charred, burnt, tasted like charcoal.. but raw on the inside. The sides were not too exciting either. We politely brought it to the servers attention and she responded with "what do you want me to do?".. very snotty. Then she brought us a new one just as bad and acted snotty and awkward the rest of the time. When she was away, the table next to us over heard and told us that their dishes were also burnt to a crisp and barely edible. Then the table to the other side of us chimed in with agreement about their campfire tasting dinners as well! I wanted to talk to the management about it but they had gone. Any person with the slightest training or experience in cooking would have known that those dishes were made wrong and they should not have served them. And the server should have been apologetic and helpful instead of defensive toward a clearly unsatisfactory dish. Overall, the experience was one of the worst I've had in a very long time. And it is quite a shame because I really wanted to like them.

had a similar experience there with burgers; burnt to a crisp on the outside and raw in the middle.

We went for the first time a couple weeks ago. Our steak frites rated a solid "meh," and the service was equally indifferent. Too bad, because it was pretty fucking cozy sitting in the front window after dark, as the snowflakes fell.

Same experience here. The burger also had a charcoal taste to it.

Four trips, never a bad meal.

Granted, I haven't had the steak, or the burger.

Frites were indeed mediocre, and the last last last thing I'd order there is the burger. These bad reports re: burger only serve to increase my confidence in that position.

you say that like there's a vast menu there and the burger is some afterthought to the huddled masses. in fact there are about five things to choose from, and the burger is lavished with all kinds of descriptive detail insinuating that it is indeed a specialty of the house.
the place this joint most closely resembles, bra size v aside, is the weary traveller... and no one ever pontificates about ordering THEIR burger as a last resort.

Wow, I enjoyed my burger and frites when I went, but that was right after opening. Perhaps they were actually trying at that point. After reading bookpolice's review, I was thinking about a return trip. Now, not so much. The frites at Brasserie V are still good!

Easy on the rageahol, bra. It's not my fault your 'joke' was incomprehensible.

It's been my observation that a key to humor is other people knowing what the fuck you're talking about.

So, yes - WTF.

As in - WTF is your problem? Bra too tight?

I understand what dep's doing with 'bra size' and 'brasserie', but is it funny? Maybe this is the brand of humor where other people aren't supposed to get it. Because I don't get it what bra sizes have to do with Brass V. V would be a very large cup size, so maybe really large breasted women go/work there? Not sure if this is a good or bad thing...please explain yourself!

indeed a simple dumb play on the words "brasserie v" which is the somewhat pretentious and incomprehensible name of the precursor to monroe st bistro. nothing more, nothing less.
i burned my bra in '73. msb is burning burgers in '08.
