West side bars and taverns - suggestions?

Postby jonk » Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:25 am

I recently moved to the far west side of Madison. I lived near campus while I went to school here a few years back, but never much ventured beyond downtown.

I'm looking for suggestions on bars and taverns on the west side of Madison. Specifically, in either the Hilldale area or anywhere along Mineral Point, but other suggestions would be welcome as well.

Really depends on what kind of bars you like, but I'm partial to:

Oak Crest Tavern

Village Bar

There's really only one bar, and that's Le Tigre. Just be careful not to drop the f bomb on the wrong night.

It's a little more upscale, but since you mentioned Mineral Point Road, I'd try Otto's:

I'm on the same page as Tibor- check out the Village Green (a little more West of you). They have a great veggie burger if you are into that kind of thing and if you aren't, the rest of their food is great as well. Has a nice small town feel and the bartenders and cooks are really nice and always make you feel welcome.

A scissorhands after my own heart. We love the VG, it's walking distance from our house. No credit cards, but they do take checks. Capital on tap, and good cheese curds. Definitely a favorite.

I also like the Village Green, although I haven't been there in a while.

I also like the Blue Moon for atmosphere.

For beer snobs, there's nothing that really compares to the Malt House out on the west side. I think Old Chicago probably has the best beer selection on the West side for bars. It's actually not such a bad bar, despite being a chain.

Yeah, it's almost walking distance from us as well. My husband would much rather drive than walk, though...it is kind of a long hike for us I suppose, but not too terribly bad. Maybe we'll see you up there some day (and not even know it!)

Village Green in Middleton; should be really great spot post 1/2/09 as it voluntarily goes smoke-free!

Hmmm. I see that as a deterrent. Why hang out at a bar in Middleton if you can't smoke? Being Smoke-Free doesn't necessarily make a place "better".

It certainly does if you are not a smoker.

Correct. You see you used what we call a "qualifier" "if you are not a smoker". A rare occurrence when discussing the topic in my experience.

Hubby & I love the VG, the bar staff is great and very friendly. Great food. But we slacked off going there for lunch because of the smoke. Ecstatically happy to know they voluntarily went smoke free and we will be back to being regulars again.

hilldale/mineral point road area? Village Bar. Fried brats are yummy, and they've done the place up some in the past few years.
